Does anyone feel stupid writing lyrics?

If I did I would write a song that sounds like this:

Why the fuck don't I sound like Andy Sneap
That mother fucker mixes albums in his sleep
Recordings hell and Im crying towards the heavens
They say its easy just use SM57s
I point that fucker to the outside of the cone
If I did stem cell research poop would be my clone
I try to reamp but I capture tons of hiss
I've heard better tone when Andy takes a piss
I'll keep recording as Im building up with rage
Maybe one day I'll get reamped at Backstage

what the fuck. :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

It's interesting how opinions differ. After your post I checked out their lyrics on their 2006 release and to me they were exactly the cliché and pretentious stuff that is totally cheap and means nothing. The following words should totally be on a "use only if threatened with violence"-list:

shadow
darkness
tomb
rose
breath
skin
within
arms
dust
wings

the list is quite long and the lyrics I found at:

http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/mydyingbride/alineofdeathlesskings.html#4

are totally some of the most cliché rhymes I have heard in a long time!

I can seriously write an album of stuff like this in 3 hours without sweating.

I'd go back a few more albums, I dont listen to anything by MDB past Like gods of the son. Check the lyrics to the "As the flower withers" if anything they have become a cliche' of themselves. And like the post above said ,it's much easier to draw on personal experience. When I was at my lowest songs flowed from me. Now I'm doing great and I cant write shit!!!

i'm pretty good at writing parody/comical/tongue-in-cheek lyrics. I'm also decent at writing stuff about zombies. I think it's because i don't have to take it too seriously. when i attempt meaningful lyrics, i feel douchey.

Writing lyrics is fun, since for an album you can create a mini-book :) Personally I like concept albums quite a lot, ever since reading the booklet of Fear Factory's Obsolete back in 1998 at the age of 14. It's a shame so few bands do them.

Bingo!

Theme / concept writing works best for me. I think almost all bands should have at least some small connecting theme to their cds, not necessarily always a full blown concept but some subject that helps tie all of the tunes together. But I think reading your own lyrics can be a bit like hearing your own voice recorded .. most people don't like it or don't feel comfortable with it, no matter how good it is.

This isn't to say that I think I write good lyrics or even good music ... just saying that I'd probably like them a lot more and feel more comfortable reading them if I knew someone else had written them. If anyone cares for a laugh, check out our page ... a couple of the songs were co-written as far as the lyrics go but its all done in the same style and whatever ...

My worthless input
Cheers!

Lets take, for example, Devin Townsend.

Most of his SYL lyrics consist of "Fuck You". I don't think I've heard anyone else lately come up with context surrounding "I hate you, you suck, fuck you, etc..." and actually make it worth listening to.

One song sums up the whole lyricism things to me: Satans Ice Cream Truck.

Yes. I feel stupid writing lyrics and it feels like more of a chore for me as well but I feel even more stupider :goggly: when someone reads/hears them. I do it anyway. Sometimes they turn out pretty cool, sometimes not.

Its so hard though. It could take me days, weeks or even months to finish one song and feel at least fairly satisfied with it. I like to rhyme...a lot...and I like to have the same number of syllables in each line (or as close as possible). This makes it very difficult and probably a bit boring but possibly more memorable.

I feel like it has to be like building a house. You need everything to be perfectly designed and structured. You don't want anything crazy in there that would throw it all out of whack making it feel unbalanced.

I don't feel stupid writing lyrics at all. Maybe because they tend to become veeery abstract and conceptual, like a poem (best comparison I could offer would be Cynic's lyrics). I don't like to write "straight to the bone" - it takes away the room for interpretation and therefore the magic of lyrics.

[Rant]
I do, however, feel embarrassed about the lyrics our singer writes. He sucks so much at it, it's not even funny anymore. He has absolutely no sense for rhetoric figures - he probably doesn't even know what a metaphor is. And he's absolutely incapable to comprehend or pronounce the English language (let alone his mother tongue).

It's so frustrating, you have a band with a certain musical level and standard but the whole package gets ruined by moronic lyrics. I've already re-written basically anything he wrote and we plainly told him that he's not going to contribute any more lyrics to this band. That may sound very egoistic and arrogant but I really think that the educational gap between the band members is an enduring problem.[/Rant]

As the vocalist in one of my bands I find that writing lyrics is more like telling a story when I right. I don't write too many cliches I just write how I feel on the subject I chose to write on XD

All good fun I may add :)
