Does being brutal make a band good?

Brutality doesn't mean shit to me, I mean listen to the whole goregrind genre...mostly all crap if you ask me.

Listen harder, or to the better bands in the genre, dolt.:kickass:

so far only one person has disagreed with the majority in this thread... which is too bad. personally, i don't care for brutality in music very much at all, but if someone else does, what is wrong with that? what i'd call stupid is pretending you understand why people listen to music, and judging them as stupid because they favour brutality over what you prefer (seems to be mostly melody/intricate songwriting around here?)

Just to play Devil's Advocate...

I think with a lot of metalheads (mostly on the net)...brutal = good. It's impossible for a band to be good if they are on mainstream radio or have any clean sung lyrics.

For example...Slipknot - Iowa. That CD is just awesome...great songwriting, good hooks, nice vocals. Just because it's "mainstream" metalheads hate it. I'm a pretty true metalhead that likes underground brutal stuff, but Iowa is a NICE metal albumn with some serious aggression that beats "raaar" vocals any day of the week.

I think that brutality is an addition. Every band that has it is interesting and I don't mean raping priests or killing your mom things. For example Opeths Funeral Portrait, there is a moment of the song which you could compare to death metal IMO. Offcourse brutality doesn't equal with creativity but who cares? It makes bands better.

Well Scott, I have some tragic news for you.

You are a dumbass.

To be honest, I don't need a song to be "brutal" at all - I don't mind if it is (that is if it makes sense for it to be brutal) - but I DO care if the song is heavy. Frankly, if it ain't heavy, I ain't listening.

No, heaviness and brutality aren't the same. Brutality is the RRRRARAARRARARARARAAGHGAHGAGHAG moment. Heaviness is an attitude, an atmosphere. A band can be brutal without being heavy, and visa versa.

Well, I think so anyway.

What other goregrind do you like, btw. I know you like Carcass a lot, and while I think Necroticism is massively overrated, I like their goregrind material a lot. Have you heard Bodies Lay Broken?

Excallyboo - you I guess are the example of the music elitist that needs to classify people's tastes by a single band they like or dislike.

Have you ever seen Nile or Hate Eternal live? They are the biggest flipping joke! It's just noise! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR in a fuzzy distorted wall of white noise. It's crazy...it is embarassing to watch how bad that music sounds...yet they are considered "brutal"

You hath uttered the unutterable.

lol

Bros...if you put Slipknot Iowa up against half the death metal out there, they blow them away. Most death metal cd's are just one long song...they all sound the damn same. Cannibal Corpse is sweet live, but after 3 songs...blaaaaaaah....ZZZzz....all the same.

Slipknot's first CD was good, but not really metal too much...and their last was disgusting and horrible....but Iowa was definitely a great aggressive brutal in a different way CD.

I love how people will consider Maiden/Ozzy/Sabbath/Priest metal....but Slipknot isn't. Head to head...the guitars, drums, and pure hate coming from Iowa blows any of those bands out of the water in terms of brutality.

You are still a dumbass.

The reason why people don't like Slipknot is that they play watered down, semi-agressive, simple songs, and are hailed by all the world as the gods of modern metal. There singer can't sing very well, they have like 6 useless band members, and the guitars are far simpler than anything on a death metal album. Even if many death metal songs are samey sounding it's still better than what Slipknot has produced.
