Dream Theater Appreciation Thread

The new album does suck, but I still really like Dream Theater. SFaM is probably my favorite album ever. I like all the albums of theirs that I own. I got into them before a lot of metal bands. Perhaps if I was really into metal first, I wouldn't feel the same way about them, as I seldom listen to them at all these days.

I thought I was the only one on here who doesn't like them. I wouldn't go so far as to call them a horrible band, it's just that their music isn't my cup of tea. I can tell that they are very talented though.

Yes.

What a horrible horrible band, the guy who said they sound like Sonic the Hedgehog music is right. It's so tacky and tastless in toning and progression, and I won't even get started on the vocalist. And even if they are great instrumentalists, so what, they're so horrible at what they do it's not even funny. Shit, Rush was cheesy and had a vocalist that sounded like an old women but they still made (some of thier stuff) fun, Dream Theatre can't even do that cuz they're too busy thinking about how good they are on their instruments...

they have a couple of cool riffs, and are obviously talented musicians(like megadeth) but (like megadeth) they suck massive wang when it comes to writing songs, and have one of the funniest/worst vocalists i've ever heard. they make me laugh :D

I bought "When dream and day unite" just when it came out (in vinyl copy) and after few listenings it became one of my favourite albums.
They've reached the top with Awake and Metropolis pt.2, opening a new seam to metal that many bands are following. This must be appreciated.

I agree that Sonic the Hedgehog has awesome music. I can recognize pretty much every level theme from the Genesis games instantly :)

Awesome song. "The Glass Prison" is good too. Fuck everything else, especially that horrid new album. Saw em live and they blew.

Pull Me Under is one of their better songs because there's a lack of wankery in it.

Every once in awhile I'll play the Sonic series on my emulator just to bring back old memories, and for midi the music does indeed kick ass. Can't say much about the new Sonic games though. Cheesy rock soundtracks.

Havent played any sonic games since Sonic & Tails (that was no. 2, right?). I would play an emulator, but I'd rather go and find an old Mega-Drive at a second hand store and find the game.

I own Images and Words aswell as Awake, and both of them are fuckin awesome albums. I don't think their composition/songwriting is bad...

Oh Lord.

People who think they are a "wank" band has obviously not listened to their whole catalogue.

People who say that Dream Theater can't write good songs have even less of a clue.

Well you can't win. Mainstream bands get chewed out for not knowing how to play their instruments. Dream Theater get ragged on for knowing how to play them too well. What can ya do? You're damned if you do, and damned if you don't. They are definately a band subjective to personal taste. Because their technicality is "keen". (If I can borrow a word from the brady bunch) I also highly disagree with the statements saying that they don't know how to compose a song. Afterall wankings isn't a bad thing. If it weren't...There would be no porno industry :tickled:

Yeah, but do you really wanna hear somebody masturbating all over a decent metal album? Blegh.

Utuk Xul - drop the "you just don't have a clue" argument; people use it in every DT debate and it does nothing. I'm sure I could dig through their entire catalog and find some decent power/prog songs scattered here and there, but why would I do that when I can just buy the new Manticora album instead? Not worth my tine.

Or perhaps one could say that I don't get the meaning of their songs. And the meaning of their songs is to show off their technical prowess? Sorry, I listen to music not long solos stuck in completely incoherent parts of "songs". If I were to listen to technical prowess with songwriting something....different?

Agreed. People should listen to the songs Home, Lie, and The Mirror. If that doesn't change their minds, I'd say nothing will.
