Okay guys, i know this is a DT forum, but you guys are responsible for turning me into a DT-aholic, so i need your input. I've never touched Dream Theater because i was told that it's not really music so i never bothered. What's the real story?? Hate em or love em? If you like em, why?

Dream Theater are amazing progressive metal/rock musicians. Some people find their singers voice irritating, but he has great capabilites, and he's one of my favorite vocalists of all time. Dream Theater has released some great albums. Their 3rd album called Awake is my 2nd favorite album of all time, surpassing such amazing releases like The Gallery by Dark Tranquillity. Anyway, that's probably pretty much their only release with most metal songs.. their other stuff is more like progressive rock.. And their last album (6 degrees of inner turbulence) has some metal songs in it, but it's still mostly prog rock.

me, me!!! ask me!!!!
well I'll tell you anyway!!! I'm a DT freak :)
the way I see it (once again I KNOW there are much ppl disagreeing me but well it's up to tasts)
Dream Theater is the band for the ones who have gotten bored of some mainstream genres. First time I listened DreamT I thought it was somekind of SuperMusicians doing crap. But sometime later, once totaly fed up of powermetal I just tried again, and it began arising in me...and still now 4 years after my addiction I just find them as amazing as then. I still find many new things on song I've listened zillions of times!!! They're the best musicians of their kind (except for Labrie (singer) may be)
Their music is totaly different to the normal stuff...it's complexity and everchanging rythm. To me it's perfection in the music world. You all know that Dark Guardian and Blind Tranquillity are my fave bands, so I'm not saying Dream Theater are the best ones, sometimes other bands beat them in the way to touch audience, but at least in the music fact they're unbeatable.
To me Metropolis 2: Scenes from a memory is the best metal album ever! It's the album I've heard most times and still amazes me!!!
will stop now, if you have another question just ask....don't want to bore the others ;)

The best way to find out if you like em or not is to listen to their music. :)

Dream Theater are coming to play on march 3rd, in my town, anyone coming?

well i've tried hard with Dream Theater in the past, never managed to like them....except pull me under that is....
even listened some DT this morning..... :err:
but still haven't discovered the magic in it....

but I have to admit.....Dream theater is a very talneted band, there is no doubt about it.... i just can't stand them...they are way to complicated to me (to the extend that my mind automatically thinks "you damned posers" ) and way tooo soft...
not that i am some kind of super evil heavy metalhead...it's just that DreamT isn't cup of tea......maybe some day i will get hooked on them, who knows......

you'd better listen yourself and see how things will go :)

rahvin's two cents: dream theater are an overall boring, uninspired band which makes up for its lack of sense of melody with sheer playing capabilities. in the past, a few songs were ok, with one exception (i.e., a song i really really like) which is space-dye vest. nowadays, dream theater play much too varied, 8+ minutes song with lots of unassuming singing, self-important lyrics and tons of guitarwork that mostly just doesn't add up. some slow parts might be relaxing, but i wouldn't suggest the band to anyone. on the other hand, they're very popular and have managed to make a lasting impression on the scene, so they're worth checking out just for the sake of musical culture.

Just listen the wise words of FatherVic. Dream Theater's music isn't direct enough to attract the senses at the first heard of a song.

well I understand those all who doesn't like the band...I understand really. But UNINSPIRED???? I mean....a band that the last two records have been recorded directly in the studio without having anything written before are not Uninspired! They have MUSIC in them....I mean, Jordan Rudess has done more cd's than I could count....they (three of them) wrote LTE2 in 14 days! I mean 14 days!!!!!!!! to record an album which kick major ass!!!!
you can't dislike them, but they are the best musicians, even they doesn't touch everyone :p

and how could I take something from someone who actually likes punk music!!!! :p ;)

the best musicians :bah:
there are so many chupi musicians around, maybe some even better than your personal gods mr.Melon,so don't let your excitement lead you to exaggerations.... (damn, sometimes i love getting people down to earth :p )

haven't seen a better basist....and no, steve digiorgio it's not as good as Myung....
haven't seen a keyboardist as Jordan Rudess...not even Kevin Moore (DT former keyboardist)
haven't seen a drummer as Mike Portnoy....well Mike Terrana is somehow near!
haven't seen a guitarrist as John Petrucci...and I'm talking a "band_guitarrist" not a plain soloist since then Vai and Becker or Satriani may be better...

that doesn't mean they're the best band.....but at least are the best musicians I've ever seen live! (and heard)

I think Rahvin was joking, playing with our feelings, touching our most sensible sense, playing poker in the bottom of our hearts.

But anyway, if you don't like so much the songs by Dream Theater, try first with the parallel projects of his members, maybe easier to taste. Jordan Rudess' solo albums are relaxing but made technically admirables, based obviously on keyboards. Mike Portnoy joined together with Neal Morse (Spock's Beard), Pete Trevawas (Marillion) and Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings) in an interesting project called Transatlantic, a great mixture of each band.

And if you like the instrumental albums, made only by music, you will reckon that music can speak the lyrics by itself when you'll listen to Liquid Tension Experiment.

Oh, btw:

@Mel: Do ya love to push ppl down to earth and help them to fly high right to the clouds too?. You should listen "Images & Words", you could believe.

FatherVic.....thanx for defending them........ however, i must correct you on the fact that Portnoy does at least have an equal, if not a superior... one word... Trym...

Has anyone here heard the new album? I picked it up a few days ago and it in blew me away. Not only is the music standard kick-ass-ness (for an American band, that is...), but LaBrie no longer sucks as much ass... (he actually sounds like Dave Mustaine, weirdly enough). I recommend you download some of the new stuff.

I can see where some of you people don't like them because they are not as hard, i'll admit thats true... but to say they aren't talented?...

 when it comes to bands i can't stand it can happen ;)
little robot,i have tried and tried and tried with dream theater, and nothing...the only magic i find is in "pull me under" and a biiiiiit in "space dye vest" for some personal reason...
and i actually feel sort of embarassed lately, cause ,even though i'd said i'll never listen to DT again,i'm now trying again to experience their music again...mostly because i want to find out why someone who is very special to me is so fascinated by their music :)

EDIT: my 1600th post and i talk about dream theater???

@fathervic: about uninspired, i was trying to say that - in my opinion, of course - they have very little sense of how to put something new and fresh in a song. they sure know how to play: i wasn't even addressing that and it's not as if i'm any judge anyway (i can play a part, or play dead at best ;) ). it's just that i think they put great guitarwork in their songs and don't care about the song at all. i might like punk, but i also like good musicians, as long as they have something interesting to show apart from sheer skills.

@|ngenius: tnx for suggesting, i'll sure check some things out as soon as i've got the time.

@kovenant84: dunno if it was addressed to me, but just in case... i'm not saying they aren't talented, i'm saying they have just craftmanship. and i listen to a lot of metal but i'm much more into different, less heavy styles of music, so i don't think i'm shunning dream theater for being sloppy. although i do think they're slightly sloppy. ;)

maybe you really should go listen to meshuggah (only for the sheer playing capabilities of the drummer) or terry bozzio. mike portnoy really is a stand-out-drummer, as all other dreamT members are stand-out-musicians, but all wrapped together seems to me like shit. you just can't set a bunch of solo-musicians together and get a decent song (IMO). they're just too overloaded.

Dream Theater one amazing band!! Everybody in the band are extremely talented! They arent death metal, but hey they Rock! they switch timings alot and have alot a riffs and solos in one song. They are really progressive. Evyerbody can like them. even your parents! they solos are really great. John Pertucci is one great Guitarist! you'll hear the keyboard and guitar soloing together in alot of songs and its sounds reallly coool! the bass will follow along too, he solos really well. and the Drummer Mike Portnoy is one great drummer. he keeps up really well and his drum solos are addictive to listen to! well DREAM THEATER is one amazing band. If you like them then check out their side project Liquid Tension Project, songs like Acid Rain, Paradigm shift and Universal Mind KICK ASS!!! they are really progressive and reallly good. Very addictive, Check em out!!!

to summarize it up, JoD:

either you hate dream theater, or you are amazed. jsut go figure out by yourself. i had high expectations when i first heard them, for everyone told me how great they are and how i as a drumer could not know mike portnoy. well, i heard'em... and was lost in tearful laughter for over a minute. so even if you hate them, be sure to have a listen, since it is sooo amusing. and maybe you even like them and will hate me for this post... who knows :D
