He kills it, but he should ditch that horrible red octopus deathskull thingie IMO.

I'm surprised the drummer from Between The Buried And Me didn't do the audition for DT (considering how proggy BTBAM got, and how both bands love each other).

Prob because he's already in a better band.

if you dislike DT so much, why come into a thread about their drummer search just to talk trash? Sounds like a waste of time to me.

I really hope this will put DT on the right track. There've been a lot of good bits in their last few albums but the majority of stuff was wanking about with time signatures for the hell of it, and weird noises from Rudess, and shredding from Petrucci and.. shouting? from Portnoy.

Whoever actually knows who got the part (and is not just assuming Mangini) PM me please.

You cannot go wrong with amazing players + amazing gear + amazing sound engineers/producers. The high-pitch toms sound kind of weird though :)

Except when it comes to recording an album, apparently.

because the reality tv stance is kind of ridiculous, and yet the audition thing is interesting to watch, and they're gonna try out some killer drummers

you don't have to be a huge fan of one band to be interested in their studio reports, band drama, tour reports and whatnots

i actually learn a lot of interesting stuff from bands i don't really enjoy listening to

You mean the production on some of their albums sucked, or the songs themselves ?

All the stuff i've heard from them had always amazing production, especially drums.

vote for minneman, he seems so funny, DT needs drummer like that to improve their boring live performance

I personally think it's a great idea to watch the audition process. I love DT and am loving this mini documentary.

They made it for us, the fans. I don't see how it's "selling out" or cheesey since it's free and the only people that will ever watch it are DT fans to begin with!

Hopefully more Images and Words than Systematic Chaos this time round :p

Recently, both. They've had some amazing productions for sure (Falling into Infinity!) but I don't think their recent stuff sounds great. Really loud hihats while his other 20 cymbals were really soft, for example, really detracts from whats being played. After hearing Mike play on the new Transatlantic album and have his drums all replaced, I have to say, even though they sounded 'better' on the Transatlantic album, they didn't sound like Mike, and I'm really really glad they keep their drums natural, and I hope they continue with that with whoever they choose. Anyone in the auditions has the ability to pull off an all-natural (or close-to) drum sound.

I´ve once tracked a famous Aquiles Priester student. He impressd me much more than Aquiles, that I´ve seen playin on Angra and Hangar. The boy was a beast, broke a pair of sticks for every song tracked  Here´s a video of him at the age of 14.

Holy hell. That's even more ridiculous than the old Tony Royster JR solo from when he was a kid..

Just tell us who the drummer is, this is stupid!
I have no problem with any of them in DT except Minnemann, Donati.
I'm not questioning they're qualities, they are amazing drummers, but I think they're still is the least suitable for DT.

Wow that's weird...

This is something that i really love about the DT records production... the drums tone is a badass natural drums tone.

Unfortunately, I think the trend will continue regardless of what drummer they get.
You're right, since the 00s, the band has pretty much put out albums that have like, one good song, and the rest is just Rudess with that fucking irritating keyboard sound, Petrucci not knowing when to restrain himself and just general laughable song writing.
I do sincerely hope for the best for whatever drummer gets the gig, as they'll deserve the pay check and the exposure, but really can't understand how anyone is really getting all excited over this.
No matter what drummer they get, Dream Theater will always be a band that will never recapture the glory of how amazing they were in the 90s.

THIS. as far as i'm concerned, SFAM was a milestone, 6 degrees was fine, ToT was also cool for those who always enjoyed their heavier moments more than the mellow ones, but after that they didn't put out anything remotely listenable.
a shame, considering they're responsible for masterpieces like awake, images and words, change of seasons...it's not even the same band anymore as far as i'm concerned.
bottom line is....i couldn't care less about them right now XD
