First off - I'm glad it worked out that Mangini will be the drummer for DT going forward, it was my opinion all along that he was going to get it and when you think about it, he is the perfect fit from a background, personality, skill, you name it, he had the upper hand before the auditions began. He's a northeast guy born in Massachusetts, he's about the same age as the rest of DT (4 years older than both Johns), you have the Berklee connection (John and John both students, Mike a teacher there), also it sounds like Mangini already had a relationship with Portnoy and if anything that previous friendship probably helped him in the end, he had played with LaBrie before, add to that the fact that he pretty much nailed all the tests they tossed at him including the riff test where you could see that he picked it right up (I'm figuring if he can teach at Berklee he better be able to figure meters out quickly); add it all up and it really seems like a no-brainer in hindsight.
I'm really looking forward to the hearing the results and secretly hoping it will light a spark of creativity that DT has been lacking over the past several years.
So, in the end - congrats Mike, you really seem to be the best candidate for the job.
