What are some techniques to bring drums to life?

I notice that I usually but tiny reverb on the main bus for the drums. I also add a little 4k and up. Gives it a sparkle. I never can get the whole thing to sound very lively like and have a lot of character. Hmmm....anything you guys do that you know that works. Or Joey, if you want to share something with us, that would be great too.
thanks guys

Id say its all about the source sound.

If its not bright enough, or too bright why not? Microphones, pre-amps, placement, tunings.

Same for everything, judge the source sound and make changes where you feel nessacary

Chose of samples, velocites, hits, sticks(mallets, brushes, wooden....). So lets call this arranging, so a drummer records a part so in theory, he arranged certain hits into that beat.... this is all classed under performance, in essence meaning the source sound that has been captured, or in the programmed drums case the 'source material'

So again 90% about the PERFORMANCE.
