Fuck You, I'm from Texas
Following my recent participation in a Maiden-related discussion, I was left confused about my validity as a metal head. I'm still a noob for the most part, and since I can't get into Maiden and Priest, I'd like to know what are some other essential bands for any metal head?

Any genre and any band would be appreciated. Just making an attempt to spread my knowledge here.

You couldn't have phrased it more awkwardly, seedofvengeance
Just listen to what you know and like. A lot of the metal that gets discussed in here, while good, is acquired taste anyway.
There is no such thing as essential bands. There are bands that have an established cult following, but that's about it.

I don't mind Priest... they're OK, I wouldn't buy an album from them or anything, though.

And before this continues... You're getting nowhere with these types of comments. I don't like them, end of story. You telling me I have to will not change my tastes. You are completely off topic when even mentioning them. It's not that big of a deal that I don't like 2 bands. So, if you could post something productive, feel free to not waste my time.

The bands that have developed a cult following is pretty much what I'm looking for.

See, I give everything a try when it comes to music. I would tell you to try out some OSDM, but most of it I find to be hit or miss.

I'll list a few from OSDM that I like and a few find boring

OSDM I like:
Nocturnus
Morbid Angel
At The Gates
Asphyx

OSDM I find boring or still can't get into right now:
Entombed (Clandestine)
Autopsy (Severed Survival)
Possessed (Seven Churches)

I'm not a big fan of Maiden or Priest. I used to listen to them when I was younger, but I've grown away from the music. Personally, I think they're part of the process of getting into metal, but you don't have to listen to them to like metal. There are tons of infinitely better bands.

This is an elitist thread!

I considering myself as a metalhead and I don't listen to high-rated bands other than Slayer and sometime Black Sabbath...

The place of metal is the underground. For me, the ones who leaved it are no more that interesting, 'cause they often sold their soul to a promoter or a label...

I understand and agree.

I grew up on Maiden, Priest, Queensryche, Metallica and recognize and appreciate thier influence on the metal scene over the years. The fact is I really don't listen to them much anymore. Bands now that interest me in Pyramaze, Communic, Hibria, are fairly new and relatively unknown in metal. Some are "working mans" bands that have real jobs to survive and play and get what they can out of thier part-time metal music. Yet, in a short time these bands have released some of the best metal I have ever heard in nearing 30 years of metal listening.

The best advice (obviously) would be to take advantage of todays resources and search, search and keep searching for metal bands that appeal to oneself...don't settle for anything less. Now we can take the time look up bands that play power, epic, folk, death, etc and pick and choose. This option was not available to us "old school" guys in the past.

I don't mind Priest... they're OK, I wouldn't buy an album from them or anything, though.

That's just the problem though... you can't really appreciate Priest or Maiden for that fact without buying a few albums. I didn't like Priest for a while and the first time I heard Maiden I was like "WTF is this shit?" It was only after I bought a few albums from each band that it finally clicked.

I'm not going to waste money on a CD if I don't like the music I've heard from it. I'd rather buy a CD I know I will enjoy, than taking a $15 flier on a CD that has a low probability of being enjoyable to me.

you're from Texas? How about Pantera? I consider them to be essential. I'm burning some c.d's for my 11 year old brother, who is just starting to like "metal" ( so far, besides what I've introduced him to, he likes green day and all american rejects) ugh. I put a lot of Pantera, Slayer, Metallica, Black Sabath, some Dio, Cannibal Corpse, Hatebreed, Static-x, and Misfits on there for him.

Pantera and Black Sabbath are obvious absolute essentials

I'm actually from the Fort Worth/Dallas area, so Pantera is larger than life here. I know a few people who went to high school with Vinnie and Dime, also.
