Essentials

I'm not going to waste money on a CD if I don't like the music I've heard from it. I'd rather buy a CD I know I will enjoy, than taking a $15 flier on a CD that has a low probability of being enjoyable to me.

or you can just download all their shit and listen to it and then make an informed judgment... like i said i didn't used to like priest but i bought a few albums based on the reviews of others and was eventually converted.

become familiar with all this shit and youll be well on your way

proto-metal
blue cheer, sir lord baltimore, cream, deep purple, discharge, led zep, the doors

motorhead, angel witch, diamond head, saxon, witchfinder general, mercyful fate, cirith ungol, manilla road, helloween, manowar, crimson glory, fates warning, jag panzer, running wild, queensryche, pagan altar

doom
pentagram, saint vitus, trouble, candlemass, cathedral, winter, dream death, skepticism, thergothon

thrash
venom, metallica, slayer, megadeth, anthrax, exodus, dark angel, sepultura, kreator, destruction, sodom, celtic frost, overkill

death
possessed, death, autopsy, sepultura (earlier), master/deathstrike, morbid angel, carcass, atheist, bolt thrower, at the gates, darkthrone (debut), entombed, dismember, carnage, suffocation, immolation, deicide

you don't need to like all that stuff (obviously) but if you want a historical sense of metal these are all classic bands worth knowing. keep in mind a lot of them cross over into other genres, i just put them in the categories i usually associate them with

your best post
and a goddamn solid list
I have most of this, but I just might print this out and use it as a guide for my next couple purchases.
/dick-sucking

Nosferatu is mad fucking cheap on Amazon, like 7$. A Distant Thunder is 6$ on Amazon and it's ok. I'd agree with No Country that A Distant or Remants is either their #2 cd. Sins of the Past is a greatest hits.

I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard of Helstar.
Didn't see Sabbath missing. That is a problem.

id say his thrash list sucks and he's missing Helstar and Twisted Tower dire but it's liveable :)

i dislike half the bands in that list, for example i fucking hate anthrax. wasn't supposed to be a 'great bands' list, a lot of my favourites aren't on there, just a list of bands you really ought to have heard before you consider yourself knowledgable about metal

and i left sabbath (and priest/maiden/etc) off because i assumed he'd heard them, but then i guess that doesn't explain why i included metallica and co. this shit should be obvious either way.

and you guys should know i like helstar plenty
