Ever notice this about a lot of pro recordings?

Ive always noticed that on this TBS cd. It reminds me of when I record vocals in a less than ideally quiet room, after compressing a little it brings out a nasty tone

AHAHAHAHAHAH!

Next album that has this:

Misery Signals "Controller" on all the tracks. Listen to "Reset" inbetween vocal lines starting at 13 seconds on to 23 seconds. During the drum fill at 23 seconds it disappears.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS NOISE?!

Could it be High-Freq computer fan noise? This is what I'm thinking now.

i always seem to pick up a lot of computer fan noise in my vocal tracks and ive never had this problem, so i'd LIKE to think we could rule that out.

Yup... all over TAYF (if I'm honest, one of my favorite albums).

Most prevalent spot is on the female vocals in 'Bike Scene;' kicks in at 1:46 and can be heard clearly on both sides, since the vocals are panned.

Maybe. We need to find a common link.

Not all computer fans are created equal :heh:

Welcome back, by the way :kickass:

yeah that's the thing i guess, all fans and rooms are different. but i figure shit mic + LOUD ass computer fan + shitty ass room = recipe for squealy disaster but i've had no such problems fortunately.
although im getting my AKG back soon, modded by my friend nath with a Neumann U87's diaphragm in it, so we'll see if there's any difference

and cheers :kickass:

Well I listened to that wav clip that was posted (sorry, forgot which band) and I thought my external hard drive was spinning up.. as in, the noise it makes when you first turn it on, or first access it after it's gone to sleep. Definitely noticeable, and I think I've heard it on the Misery Signals song too.

There's an old vocal enhancement trick involving high frequencies and side-chain gating.
I have no idea if this is what you are talking about though.

Just put a sine wave at say 14khz on a free track, put a side chain gate controlled by the vocal track, blend to taste.

Edit: Just tried it myself, and it sounds like shit so maybe there's something more that I can't remember.
I heard about this in AE class, like eight years ago, so I may have forgotten something..

i just listened to what ahj posted....are you guys talking about the rediculously annoying ringing going on right when the vox come in? best way to explain the sound is it sounds like an old tv is on

AGGGGHHHH you hear it too!!!! people think i'm nuts cause i can hear a muted tele from the next room!!

I don't think YouTube has ever heard any 13kHz in its life.

:lol::lol::lol:

That brightened up my morning so much... nearly laughed down the phone at a customer

I checked it and it seems to be around 15,7khz... could they have recorded some NTSC interference?

Have you ever heard a high-pitched whiny noise in movie soundtracks?

That high-pitched noise could be coming from the old CRT video monitors the orchestras use to watch the film playback while recording the score. The horizontal scanning frequency of NTSC monitors is about 15.734kHz.

Whatever it is it would be quite weird if they ignored it, so I'm wondering if it is on purpose like some of you suggested.

I hear it. As far as the high pitched squeal right before the vocals come in, etc., I've heard the same thing using impulse plugins or convolution reverbs, especially using SIR. I can't think of any tracks I've uploaded that had it though, because I isolated it as the plugin before finishing the mix.

I have some EQ and other assorted impulses of a Massive passive and dbx (this impulse collection has propagated through this forum a few times), and those particular impulses have high pitched artifacts all over the place, IMO, at least when put through SIR.
