if you had to eat food that cost next to nothing but which was also reasonably nutritious (i.e. not ramen noodles but something that has ingredients that actually resemble edible things including but not limited to vegetables) what things would you buy and what dishes would you cook ?!?!
 
lately I've been eating oatmeal + peanut butter. Super cheap (well could be cheaper, I buy steel cut oats which taste a lot better than rolled oats but I have a feeling they're a lot more expensive per oat) and healthy and filling.

Brown rice.

that really doesn't seem like much of a "meal" though (pun not intended but now that it's there i'm going to leave it in)
 
Free moose meat and potatoes.

Potatoes in general, and whatever meaty stuff is on sale because of short date or something.
 
I had two samosas for lunch that cost 50 cents each. They were pretty damn big and filling, maybe I coulda eaten two more max as a full meal. They were filled with potato pieces, peas, and other good stuff, and some spices and they tasted great!

fresh peppers, zuchinni, mushrooms, onions stir fried and mixed then with a package of linguine. add parmesan if you like it.
serves 2 with leftovers for another days' lunch. about $5 for all.

btw, Trader Joe's pasta is awesome. (I tried it after reading this: http://nymag.com/restaurants/features/56269/ and it does indeed have a nutty, rich flavor. Ronzoni and Barilla, what we have been buying before seems downright flat now)
 
Oatmeal is a good option, cereal that is loaded with vitamins is another. (Like Total, or Special K)

I'll also add that if you make sandwiches with whole grain bread, turkey, and veggies that's pretty cheap also, can last you for days, and very good for you.
 
russian sandwich ... rye bread, turkey, russian dressing and coleslaw.
good for you and kind of "light" for those hot summer days.
 
If Auschwitz was located in Guadalajara, I'd be interned. I grew up on some of the most cheaply constructed food a kid could possibly be raised on.

The following was 80% of what I was fed when money was tight.

Ground beef tacos (no toppings)
Sloppy Joes
Mac N Cheese
Tostadas (1 Slice of Ham)
Meatless & Cheeseless Enchiladas
Pan de asucar (Bread w/ butter, doused in sugar)

I was an intimidating 6'0 125lbs my senior year in high school. Which is why I spare no expense when it comes to food nowadays. Went out for sushi three times this week. :mad:
 
Buy a whole roast chicken. First night, chicken with salad or veg. Make chicken sandwiches. 2nd night, Penne with shredded chicken and basil pesto. Make chicken sandwiches. 3rd night, sick of chicken go buy a fucking steak. I used to do that quite alot. I also used to make a big tuna bake on a Monday night which would give me dinner and like 4 lunches for about AU$8.
