Shit like nothing you've heard. Not necessarily uniquely good, just something you definitely do not see often.

Totally forgot about this band until just now. I actually dig, but I admit it's mainly for the jamaican shit goin on.

Reggae Metal!

I think Haggard is both unique and excellent. As far as symphonic metal goes, you rarely see an ensemble orchestra like this. They're definitely one of a kind.

I thought the leader singer of the first post sounded familiar - he also sang for Dub-War, an earlier band with reggae and metal influences:

I checked out their top tracks on rhapsody because this wasn't to my taste, liked 'The Day as Heaven Wept'

Bands that try and incorporate other genres are almost always fucking horrible. A band is unique in their execution of style and concept. Take Portal, for example:

Agreed. Primus was the only other good mention IMO. I'd like to add in Yattering.

Also, despite the forthcoming collective hatred of GMD, Meshuggah were unique until the djent copy+paste movement began. Of course, HamburgerBoy might have something to say about that, but to the best of my knowledge, no one really came and executed that style like they did before their existence.

Ved Buens Ende/Virus

Most people are probably already familiar with them, but great bands nonetheless.

Anubi

Weird and overlooked experimental BM from lithuania. I really like their lone ' Kai pilnaties akis užmerks mirtis ' album.

I think you're confusing me for someone else if you think I consider Meshuggah to be ripoffs of another band. I mean, with any band you can always find some point of origin, of course, but that movement was definitely spearheaded by them alone. The only potential exception is the Polish band Kobong who had a similar sound to Meshuggah around the time, but they stopped before the proper djent sound, sounding more like an alternative version of Destroy Erase Improve/Chaosphere.

I don't know how you can say Primus was the only other good mention when they're chock-full of funk and other metal-external influences, btw. Voivod and Atrox definitely carved their own niches as well.

Surprised no one has mentioned Demilich, btw.

EDIT: Oh, I just remembered Confessor, who actually were a rare band playing very math-y and groovy metal well before Meshuggah did (not that the latter didn't come at it from a different direction). From what I've read, Confessor even had a reputation among a rather nascent math rock scene completely separate from metal. That the phrase "technical doom metal" sells their identity short tells a lot of them imo.

You know, I was just being facetious when I made that comment.

EDIT: And when will you tell me where your avatar is from? I've been asking you for two years now.

I don't know why you would direct it towards me though, but ok.

You must be a meek little wallflower because I know I've readily told others on this forum. It's Baccata of Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos, a dungeon crawling RPG (a fairly awesome one imo; minimal emphasis on item collection and grinding, more on quality control and adventure, if you're into DOS-era gaming).

DOS-era gaming?

Does Legend of the Red Dragon count? I remember playing that game as a kid - good times. It was via a BBS.

Because you've built yourself quite the reputation of being a besserwisser. And  I don't get the wallflower comment, guess you're just a little sour, but thanks for letting me know. I've always loved those kinds of games.

No, I just meant that you must have been shy about it. I picture you as an innocent puppy, following me around for years but never quite capturing my attention, trying yet failing to raise your voice to audibility, maybe blushing and staring at the floor as you ask only to realize I've already left the thread. I find that incredibly cute and attractive, so don't take it insultingly.

EDIT: re: Avigrus And it's not nearly BBS-level old-school. It's a first-person game and quite streamlined for its time, from graphics to controls. If a person new to the genre had only played Legend of Grimrock before and was afraid of the classics being too inaccessible, it would be a good stepping stone.

 oh man, that's a classic HBB response if I ever saw one. Well played sir. I believe I asked you once in the pics thread, where it got buried, but I've spent every waking hour since wondering where it's from. Finally this burden has been released.

Anyway, that shit reminds me of Realms of Arkania: Startrail. Making me wanna install DOSBox again.

Hearing a lot of avant-garde, this band even for Vortex's amazing fucking voice alone is unique:

Also thank you fuckin GRACIOUSLY for Atrox, the Third and the Mortal, Ved Buens Ende, Virus, and Alchemist, definitely gonna be lookin into all of those more. This thread is proving quite fruitful! Even a pretty sweet cover of something totally familiar that I can't place with Mekong Delta- Interludium.

:kickass:

Edit: Looked up Alchemist on Rhapsody. Started off great, I was enjoying it. Then shit got... weird. Maybe they're that varied, I dunno.

For another unique voice (and band on a whole) there's Mayfair. Progressive metal with a pretty choppy rhythm section contrasted with weird slinky guitar riffs and a very theatrical singer.
