:Smug:
But anyway, I copied the categories from the first post and added some more:
Death Metal- If Opeth categorizes, I'll choose them. If they don't I guess I'll choose Death.
Prog-Metal- If Opeth categorizes, I'll choose them. If they don't I guess I'll choose Dream Theater or the Danish band Behind The Curtain.
Old Thrash- Megadeth I guess. I have two records by them and it's the only thrash I have except Machine Head's first, Testament's first (only 1 good song IMO) & two Pantera records.
New Thrash- That would probably be Machine Head or Pantera then if that's allowed.
Black Metal- Burzum or Satyricon, probably Burzum
Melodic Death- Dark Tranquility's "The gallery" is the only thing I have in that genre.
Traditional Metal- Iron Maiden
Classic Rock- This is tougher, as I mostly listen to old shit. Maybe Jethro Tull or Procul Harum. There's lots of old rock stuff that's cool, but not so many that categorizes as favorite bands by me. "Classic rock" is also a wide subject. I guess what is meant is just rock from before the 80's, so there's loads of stuff that I find good, Supertramp, Mannfred Mann's Earth Band, Beatles, Cris Williamson and so on.
Prog. rock - Yes or Camel
Gothic metal - The Gathering's "Mandylion" (the only record I really like by them). First 3rd and The Mortal LP, two first Theatre of Tragedy LP.
Heavy Gothic rock - Type O Negative
Pop - Dusty Springfield perhaps. She has made some superb stuff, but also some crap (but so has most)!
Country-pop - Lee Hazlewood (some of his stuff is just straight pop and he's clearly my favorite artist!)
Country - Lee Hazlewood (some of his stuff is more or less just straight country!)
Folk-music - Hedningarna
Funk - P-Funk (Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy's Rubber Band, George Clinton, Zapp, etc.)
Soul - Marvin Gaye + some of The Isley Brother's stuff is soul and some of their stuff is funk.
Soul/funk - Minnie Riperton. Maybe Isley Brothers.
Afro-Funk - Manu Dibango or Osibisa
Soundtrack music - John Barry (I've also recently gained a great interest in Alberto Iglesias)
Jazz - Probably Oscar Peterson. Teddy Wilson's version of "'Round midnight" is clearly the best jazz song I've heard my entire life though! A fantastic song!
Jazz-Funk - Bob James or maybe Grover Washington, Jr.
Psych. rock - Iron Butterfly maybe or Pink Floyd. Most bands I have records by in that genre have stuff that's cool and stuff that's just too fucked-up tripped-out to listen to. It's an Earache sometimes!
Porno-pop - Sade
Spiritual - Dead Can Dance (if they categorize as that)
Disco - Maybe Evelyn "Champagne" King or Patrice Rushen. The most disco stuff I have is records with one or two good songs and the rest is gross fill. Van McCoy's "Disco Baby" is probably the best disco record I've heard. Another contender for that title is Michael Jackson's "Off the wall".
Classical - Mozart's "Requiem" is easily the best classical record I have, but Bizet, Bach & Rachmaninov has also done some good stuff.
Drum n' bass - NONE!!!! Do you hear me? N-O-N-E!!!!!!!!!!
Techno - When I say techno, I MEAN techno, not euro-dance, Scooter or shit like that! I'm talking Goa/Trance stuff! Inscape's "Nothing like a good friend" was the only thing I found in that genre I truly liked, some of the other stuff I could listen to, but prefered not. Now I wouldn't buy it/listen to it
Eurodance - Hhmm...I gotta think about this. When I was into hip hop/trip hop/house/downbeat I guess there was some stuff I liked in that genre, but I'm not into those 4 genres anymore.
Hip hop - Kurtis Blow's "Way out west" is the only hip hop single I haven't taken out of my collection (it's a b-side though) and the only rap song I would consider putting on nowadays.
Musical - Gershwin's "Porgy & Bess"!! It also spawned the greatest song ever to be written in the history of music IMO, "Summertime"!!
80's "hair" metal - Guns N' Roses
Punk - Hellacopters, if they categorize. They're the only "punk" band I listen to. The only other punksongs I can come up with is The Ramones' "Sedated" and The Clash's "Rock the Kashbah" that I remotely want to listen to.
Trip hop - When I was into it my favorite lp was probably Tricky's "Maxinquae" and Moloko maybe my favorite group, but as I said earlier I'm not into that stuff anymore.
House - Cassius, although I'm not into that stuff anymore either.
Downbeat - Amon Tobin, although I'm not into that stuff anymore either.
Easy listening - Ray Conniff's version of "Summertime" is without a doubt the best version of the best song I've ever heard!! His own "A love is born" is also superb!
Blues - BB King's "The thrill is gone" is probably the best blues song I've heard. John Lee Hooker's "The healer" is also superb!
Latin - Santana's two first records are cool, but they're more bluesy rock with a latin influence than latin. Edmundo Ros has done some good songs. Henry Mancini's "Norma la de Guadalajara" is also cool, although mr. Mancini's usually not considered a latin artist.
Samba - I only have one record by Miriam Makeba that would probably fit in this category and it has one or maybe two good tracks.
Grunge - Soundgarden. The only band that I really still listen to (although I also have Pearl Jam's "VS" LP).
Acid rock - The Nice probably. One of the most crazy and tripped-out bands that I have records by. Some of their stuff is nice, but some of their stuff sounds really like they were high on LSD in the studio and didn't knew what they were doing.
Robot pop - This is what Kraftwerk calls their music and they're also the best (and only) band in that genre IMO!
Electronic pop - I have an LP by Cocteau Twins that has one good song, but maybe I'll grow tired of that like I have with all other electronic crap!
I don't know if there's more genres that I have (or know). Some genres can be widely expanded. For instance pop; I have 60's pop mostly, but also french pop like Zizi Jeanmaire, Mireille Mathieu and so on. Also the rock thing could be wider. Psych, folk, singer/songwriter, etc. Also the folk thing. I have native American stuff, Icelandic folk, Faroe Island folk, Romanian folk, etc. I could continue but won't!
