Im really big into the piano, either by itself or featured in a piece. And my girlfriend (who is training to be an opera singer and loves all the classical crap) tells me that I tend to like the romantic period more than anything. Some of my favorites are:

Chopin
Tchaikovsky
Rachmaninov

try some liszt, great piano works. oh and beethoven listen to much of his piano works, he is my favorite in the piano.

Bach - St. Matthew Passion
Rachmaninov - Variations on a Theme of Chopin
Verdi - Otello
Bellini - Norma
Scriabin - Black Mass sonata
Wagner - Tristan und Isolde
Schoenberg - Verklaerkte Naecht
Elgar - Cello Concerto in E minor

and many others.

Bach's first keyboard concerto in D minor BWV1052. everyone should check out the first movement it's my alltime favorite!

I hate baroque music, but I study classical music and thus have a good reason to dislike it (hours and hours of Bach is enough to make anybody detest the guy). I much prefer to listen to, and to play music from the past 130 years. I just don't find the beauty in the older stuff - my favourite composers are Debussy, Roussel, Faure, Ravel, Shostakovich, Mahler, and so on. It's haunting, dark, mysterious, ethereal... I love it in the same way I like my metal, hahaha.

not mentioned yet in this thread:

Gustav Holst - The Planets
Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition
Edgard Varese - "Arcana"
Charles Ives - Three Pieces in New England

I prefer Bach and Mozart - especially solo, chamber, etc. pieces that exploit virtuosity and musical complexity. I too like harpsichord!

Has anyone mentioned Orff's Carmina Burana?!

Sibelius. His symphonies were amazing. Especially the finale to the second. Not to mention he was born on my birthday.

I used to like Mozart, but we went to see a theaterplay called Amadeus and he was really naive and arrogant, but he worked real hard for his music.
anyway I play in a brassband so we play a lot of that kind of music, I like ennio morricone's pieces

Amadeus isn't historically correct.
