Favorite Classical Composers? Pieces?

I'm trying to get into the Rite of Spring and I'm liking what I'm hearing, but it's quite a challenging piece of music. Not the easiest thing to get into if you ask me.

Anyway, I love Chopin, Beethoven, Gershwin (I don't think I've seen him mentioned, although this topic mentions plenty of 20th century composers), Shostakovich, etc. Too lazy to think of more at the moment.

So you are into Shostakovich but the Rite of Spring is challenging? Hmmm... I found it the other way around.

Cool thread!
One of my favourites in modern music is Edgar Varese, he's done some of the most groundbreaking stuff musically the past century. I really enjoy "Ionisation", "Amerique" and his Offrandes. Then of course Ligeti, Messiaen and Berg to mention a few.

The romantic stuff is really not my thing tho, so I stick to the Baroque era with Bach being The Master. Currently stuck with Concerto in A Moll (BWV 1065), I just love all three parts of it.

Was never really into Varese myself. Ligeti, Messiaen and Berg are another story though, Berg especially (best Violin concerto ever!).
Personally I find the Romantic Period together with the modern period to be the most interesting. And yes Bach is the master of the Baroque era. My fav Bach concerto has to be the Triple Concerto in A minor.

Baroque and Modern rulez! If i can add something is Paul Hindemith. I cant say I love all his pieces sometimes he is quiet mad, but certain are my favs. eg. the organ sonata no2. (im playing it, and it is !!!!) and the piano sonatas and the vocal work von Todes Tod or something like this.

My old piano teacher utterly hated Hidemith. I thought some of his piano music was good but haven't really listened to much else.

Wrong - it's Handel :p
HA! Bach is pretty much the blueprint for all of Western Classical music. Sure Handel was good but not nearly as influential in the history of music.

Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Tcaikovsky and Ravel. I also love celtic composers. Vivaldi's Gloria is a great piece. I performed with my school once, long but great.

I like Baroque and Classical era composers the best. Not much for the Romantics.

Bach
Vivaldi
Handel
Beethoven
Mozart

This thread should be brought back. I like Bach, Beethoven and Mozart, they composed some beautiful pieces.

I'm not a big fan of classical but I do like a few composers.

John Cage (very avant-garde stuff)
Bach
Karlheinz Stockhausen (more avant-garde)
George Gershwin

So many great musicians/composers mentioned. I didn't see this but, Arvo Part-"Tabula Rasa" is probably the most moving music I've heard. After I listen to this, everything else seems to pale in comparison.
