Favorite Non-Metal music

We all here obviously share the love and passion for the finest true metal from around the world. But what kind of other music does everyone enjoy? What are your favorite genres, artists, bands, etc. that don't play metal.

This thread sparked by me going to Aurora Blues on the Fox last week to see Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Please try not talking about classic rock stuff, we all know we love Led Zeppelin, etc etc.

I have a huge personal love for jazz.

Non-metal? I've got a pretty big thing for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Fleetwood Mac (yeah, yeah, I know >_> ...)... And George Harrison's Cloud Nine album. And I like some Blackmore's Night [but not all].

I'm into some punk rock bands like Bad Religion, Descendents, ALL, The Ergs!, Alkaline Trio, Hot Water Music, The Menzingers, etc.

Also 70's psych/prog like David Bowie, The Kinks, Van Der Graaf Generator, Atomic Rooster, Captain Beyond, Hawkwind, etc.

I used to be heavily into punk / hardcore in the 90's. Stuff like Poison Idea, Angry Samoans, Toy Dolls, Gorilla Biscuits, Token Entry, Sloppy Seconds, and stuff.

I also love some Soul Asylum. Mostly the stuff from "Hang Time" and "The Horse They Rode in On" albums.

Music from movies as well. I love the 28 Days Later music, stuff from The Re-Animator and other horror films as well.

PUNK and HARCORE (Primarily 80s)
7 SECONDS
BAD RELIGION
NAKED RAYGUN
SCREECHING WEASEL
GOVERNMENT ISSUE

70s CLASSIC / HARD ROCK
KISS
RUSH
URIAH HEEP
RAINBOW
(Yeah, you can make the argument these ARE metal bands, but whatevs)

INDUSTRIAL / NEW WAVE / ALTERNATIVE 80's / 90s
THE SMITHS
MORRISSEY
THE CURE
FRONT 242
SMASHING PUMPKINS
NIRVANA
SONIC YOUTH

My favorite non-metal band is probably the Misfits. I don't listen to much other punk anymore except for the Ramones and Bad Religion. I also like the Sex Pistols' Rock N' Roll Swindle, mostly because it's funny.

The only alternative rock band I still like is Therapy?, a band from Ireland.

I'm really into neofolk/medieval/etc. types of bands, like The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath a Cloud, Ataraxia, Empyrium, Forseti, Ulver's acoustic album, Arcana, Mortiis... After listening to metal all day, it helps me get to sleep at night.

I don't listen to a ton of non-metal anymore. I used to, but just keeping up with metal is a chore these days, let alone non-metal. Some of my non-metal favorites though are:

Fiona Apple
Beck
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
Nine Inch Nails
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Yes
Badger
The Doors
ZZ Top
White Stripes
Rage Against the Machine
Frank Zappa

First off, how the hell did I forget to mention the 'Fits???
I should have also mentioned SAMHAIN and the UNDEAD as well.

Another band I missed mentioning are the GOO GOO DOLLS.
Love that band and don't care how wussy they became.

Therapy? were great!!! We used to jam the TROUBLEGUM CD all the time in college.

How did I forgot about Neil Young. I love everything, well almost everything, that man does. I'm super stoked to see him with Crazy Horse in October.

And for something completely different...I also dig most of the stuff the White Stripes have put out, minus Icky Thump.

I love the more melodic punk stuff, like Social Distortion, Bad Religion and Avail. I also am a big fan of '50s era rock and rockabilly. Beyond that it's just the odd band/artist that somehow cathes hold - The Corrs, Chris Isaak, The Bangles, Matthew Sweet. I am a huge Green Day fan too. No apologies for that.

ETA: I forgot to mention AOR. Obviously I love the hell out of some wuss rock.

no need to apoligize for being a Green Day fan.

It was Bob Byrne's bootlegging of Green Day that propeled them to super stardom!!!!!!
I don't care what anyone says!!!

not a bootleg....they agreed and I they were very happy and always thanked me every time I ran into them. I found out from a freind who was out in thier hometown at a party of thiers and they were playing my video at the party of the show I taped. They have always been really cool guys.
