I figured this would be an interesting thread. What other metal bands do you folks listen to from say 1990 onwards that don't necessarily exhibit an old school style? Some of my favorite include:

Emperor
Enslaved
Neurosis
Isis
Opeth
At the Gates
Dissection
Edge of Sanity
Cynic
Electric Wizard
Cathedral

IMO those are very old school, that's why I hear them. So that brings to: what is old school in a time frame and what's old school in a music frame?

I guees the closest I have to non-old school is The Organization and some of Suicidal Tendencies (on their groovier mood). Also maybe Anthrax - "Stomp 442" and Dream Theater - "Train Of Thought" because of the panterish or mallcorish vibes on those albums. New Nightwish and Lacuna Coil may fit here, dunno what the rest may think.

Amorphis have a strong 70s prog rock influence, but I think they're very modern sounding. As for Cathedral, I can see where you're coming from. There are very few modern sounding doom metal bands that I do enjoy, however, and I believe Cathedral have a distinct enough sound to be considered modern. Funeral of Equilibrium was one of the first really heavy, at times dronish doom metal albums, so in a way they've ushered in a new era of doom since then.

"Forest Of Equilibrium" :D , is their heavier, the only heavier doom album I know and digest is "Rampton" by Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine. I like my doom less funeral, less sludgy and more Sabbath oriented without become stoner.
So I like Candlemass, Memento Mori, Memory Garden, Krux, Thunderstorm, Well Of Souls, Solitude Aeturnus, Last Chapter, Trouble.

If I had to mention bands that came (with their first album) after 1990 that I like regardless of their old school influence, I have a lot, so to mention a few:

Angel Dust (from "Border Of Reality" up)
Ayreon
Wolf
Manigance
Force Of Evil
Goddess Of Desire
Hammerfall
Malediction
