Favorite war movies?

I'm amazed no one said ...The Big Red One, The Green Berets, Battle of the Buldge and I forget the name of the Audi Murphy film. Kelly's Heroes is a damned fine Eastwood movie, though more of a caper film set during world war 2 I guess. A bridge too far, Where Eagles Dare, Guns of Navarone Force 10 from Navarone. Dirty Dozen.

Also, I'm not sure if it is fitting in with your classification but The DOGS OF WAR is a pretty damned good film. Chris Walken with the auto-grenade launcher is classic.

I have hardly any favourite war movies.
Most of the very few war movies i have seen were thrillers,
because i can't deal with the gruesomeness of battlefield movies.

But from the few i have seen:
Das Boot: it got me untill the end. Superb suspension.
U-571: ok, another submarine movie but i like the concept of The Enigma Code.
Full Metal Jacket: first half of the movie is brilliant.
Escape from Sobibor: good movie, therefor i never ever want to see it again.
I had to watch it at school, during history class.
I was 12 and totally in shock after watching that movie.
Since then, i know i don't like war movies.

NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS!

Andy Griffith acting like a country bumpkin and his idiot friend trying to get out of the AF and join the army.

"P. L. O. Permanent Latrine Orderly."

"Wooowwweeeee!!!! Permanent latrine orderly?!?! Why that sounds mighty official, don't it?"

On the serious side, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers, Star Wars, Braveheart, The Patriot, Glory, Midway, The Bridge at Toko Ri (i think that was the name of it), Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Hamburger Hill, Lord of the Rings, The Last of the Mohicans, shit I could go on and on.
