Favourite death metal vox?

I've been digging these growlers lately...

Maurizio Iacono from Kataklysm
Johan Hegg from Amon Amarth
Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth
Mikael Stanne from Dark Tranquillity
Henri Sattler from God Dethroned

Chris Reifert from Autopsy, Abscess, Doomed, Eat My Fuk, The Ravenous is the man :headbang:

runner up awards to:
Sylvain Houde (the original Kataklysm singer)
Jayme (Damaged)
Dave Vincent (Morbid Anal) (Hatework is amazing!)
Derelict (Pan-Thy-Monium, EOS)
Simon Dower (Abramelin)
Kam Lee (Massacre - why list Barney when you can list the original?)

but the true legend is Tom G Warrior from Celtic Frost/Hellhammer - nothing sounds more tortured and deathlike than his vocals on Triumph Of Death

Impossible to pick only one

John Tardy (Obituary)
Luc Lemay (Gorguts)
Matti Way (Disgorge, Cinerary)
Frank Mullen (Suffocation)
Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth, Bloodbath)
Whoever the guy is (Sect of Execration)

John Tardy (Obituary) ... by far the most distinct voice!

Also Chuck Schuldiner ... another instantly recognizeable one.

As I've commented before I don't think there's any growlers that I think seriously have good vocals!! There are some that are less worse than others though (or better if you want to put it that way), and if black metal vocals are allowed I guess those couple of guys will be:
Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth
Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir
Aldrahn on the Thorns album (haven't really heard much else of his stuff)
Satyr from Satyricon
The guy on Dark Funeral's "The secrets of the black arts album" (don't recall his name as I haven't got the album anymore)
I guess that's it. I agree that Chuck Schuldiner's vocal always sucked, but so does practically everybody's vocal in death/black metal.

Chuck was better as a guitar player than as a singer, but to say that his vocals "suck" I think it's going too far. In fact, his voice in the first 3 or 4 albums is excellent IMO. His vocals, like his music, has served as inspiration for an entire genre, so he deserves some credit, and some respect.

I think there are a lot of growlers with good vocals FOR DEATH METAL. Put them to sing Opera or Pop, and then they suck, but it's not the case...so you cannot judge them using the normal standards of what a "good singer" is.

Tom G Warrior - Early (Hellhammer) Man , no-one can scream pain like him.
Steer - Carcass(Necro. And Heartwork)
Chuck. :headbang:
Tom Araya
John Tardy
MAX.
Lee Glanzmann - Infernal Method
John Walker - Cancer
So many more......

That's just your opinion and that he sucks is just mine. As simple as that. Sure he served as inspiration and stuff, but because he did that doesn't make me like his vocal - I still think it sucks!

Well, yes I can. I can listen to them and say if I like them. I haven't found anyone I liked so I can say "I don't think there's any growlers that I think seriously have good vocals!!". Sure, they can't sing opera and an opera singer probably can't growl (although I think it's easier to learn than opera), but whether it fits the music or not still doesn't make me like it. When I listen to Marvin Gaye on "Mercy mercy me" I think "Goddamn, he has a nice voice" (and it fits the music as well), but I don't think the same when listening to Satyricon, although they're one of my favorite black metal bands. As simple as that! If I like it, I like it. If I don't, I don't.
