Actually, LaBrie has one of the best clean voices I have ever heard, specially in the Images & Words album. Don't really like it when he switches into a more aggressive tone though.

Yes, LaBrie has a badass fucking voice.

Though, if you didn't know about the food poisoning LaBrie had that changed his voice, read the following:

Q. From various bits I've read about you in the past, you take your voice and singing very seriously. I'm wondering if you ever had a problem with your voice that got you into this mode, or if you realized early on and got yourself on the "straight and narrow" before any trouble could happen.

JL> I realized very early on that I had to be totally commited to singing and have a clear or as clear I could understanding of the art of singing. I was very serious and stayed away from anything that I thought would be detramental to my voice. Substance abuse etc...

With this being said , I did have an unfortunate accident while down in Cuba Dec. 94' with my wife and friends. I came down with food poisoning and while throwing up and being violently ill I ruptured my vocal chords. I saw 3 ENT's ( Ears, Nose and Throat specialist.) and they said it would be a very long recovery or convelescense. I felt my voice much weaker and had lost some of my range. Thankfully after a few years I gained back my entire vocal strength but never did get back my complete range. It could have been much worse.

As you can see when the accident did happen I still had most of the 'Awake' ( Waking up the World ) tour to finish. Was not a lot of fun.

Yeah, I know. Back in the early days (Images & Words & Awake), he could hit a high G (2 octaves above middle C) quite easily. After the food poisoning he dropped down to a high D. His voice had loads of problems for the last couple of years but he seems to be recovering a lot now. I saw them during the Train Of Thought tour and he kicked ass live -- he was singing a lot better than on their live DVD and album. Also, I have seen a recent video of him hitting the high F# in Learning to Live; that's just a half step below his highest recorded note, the high G in Innocence Faded.

thanks for the info :) It's rare when you get a good informtive post around here

I think in general, LaBrie is a great vocalist. The only times when I don't like his singing is when he does that weird "whisper" thing and like towards the end of "take the time" when he's like "ooooooohhhhh yeaaaaahhhh"...it's just kinda creepy IMO.

I didn't read all the posts here, so I don't know if anyone mentioned that you can buy the offical bootlegs of DT playing the whole Master of Puppets and Number of the Beasts albums on Mike Portnoy's website. There like $15 I think. And you can get some of theur other bootlegs as well.

I already mentioned that

Back to the very beginning of this thread. Metallica songs seem to be very easy to cover, almost every rock/metal band out there has done a Metallica cover. As long as they don't cover anything from St.Anger...I'd have to find the vocalist and murder them.

Yea, I saw them back in 2003. It was fucking killer.

By the way, you can really hear the difficulty he was having with his voice on Once in a Livetime.

I don't have that album yet. It's pretty much the only Dream Theater album I don't yet own. I'll have to get it sometime.
