Might I suggest grabbing your alcoholic beverage of choice, dimming the lights, throwing in the "Shipwrecked in Olso" dvd and opening your mind.....

It's one hell of an experience.

ICS can't do what Garm does, and vice versa. So I am interested in hearing ICS covering Garm's work. I wonder if they do a different arrangement to play to ICS's strengths.

Genius band, I'm glad they decided it was worth doing some more. I actually think Sideshow is their worst album, but then again it's had less time to get 'ingrained' in me the way the older ones did.

Already dig 'em. Much like the Eldritch live cd, I really don't want to see them live on DVD before I see them live in person.

I doubt they'll be jamming a lot off the first album, but that's my favorite by them. I really hope they play Wintry Grey and Du Nordavind at least. Doubtful tho.

Vortex is a great singer, but he's not gonna be the type of vocalist that kills it like Khan or Mattias Blad. I fell in love with his work on Dimmu Borgir, and that's how I found Borknagar and Arcturus.

Or, well, I was still excited about Arcturus when Garm left.

I have Sideshow Symphonies and I'm not impressed with the vocals in the least. Still looking forward to the set, though!

Wow guys, really? :guh: Did I just land on another planet? I love the way Vortex can unlock a melody in a line that no one else would have thought of, and his range is mind boggling. He might not the handsome charismatic type ala Khan but I'm fairly certain he's going to give us all a heavy metal education.

Sideshow Symphonies is my favorite of their discs, and I dearly hope they play "Hibernation Sickness Complete." Vortex has this ability to sing a line that, when listening, has a whole different dimension compared to when reading along with the lyrics. I don't know how he does it!

My second favorite song by them, right after Star-Crossed. If they play both; I think my head might explode.

You're right about his singing too... I honestly can't peg the exact reason, but it's powerful.

Not 100% sold, but definitely very intrigued. Have always heard about them, but was never inspired enough to see what all the fuss was about. I listened to a few songs, based on tunes noted here, and liked them enough to check out a full album to see if they really click. I never would have gotten into Amorphis, Mercenary, Evergrey, Spiral Architect, and a bunch of others if not for this message board and PM:X, so maybe this will be another find.

Recommendations for a newbie to the Arcturus universe?

Oh, and BTW, I was drinking some Oktoberfest beer while listening - as instructed by our fearless leader!!

is there any possibility the PP show will be like the dvd? No pyro so i guess its technically feasible to have that style of show. And for someone like me who thinks the DVD is cool but never listens to Arcturus on headphones this could be cool.

Funny you should say this, I did this when I got back late sunday night after the fest. I was sure I owned this, and had watched it once and put it away - dug it out and put it on, now I am getting even more psyched for the show :)

Curious as to why you would go with AHS over LMI?

you kinda wanna see why their gamechanger album (LMI) was such a ridiculously progressive step forward from their beginnings (the Constellation era of Arcturus. AHS was in itself a fairly unconventional Norwegian Black Metal album of the 1990s, but you could still recognize it as NBM.

I think I can use an analogy with Faith No More here.

Constellation/Reconstellation is their WCAL
Aspera Hiems Symphonia is their Introduce Yourself
The Sham Mirrors is their The Real Thing
Sideways is their K4AD,F4aLt/AotY

Disguised Masters is their Songs To Make Love to ep
but LMI is clearly their Angel Dust.

There's this total "Fuck You All We're moving forward with or without you" design, which confused the mainstream.

I LOVE that album, but it's not the right one to give to a newbie.

I wasn't knocking Vortex's voice, at all. Quite the contrary. He's one of my favorites. But OrbWeaver was saying she didn't quite like him, and I was saying he doesn't match up to the more "classic" metal voices she seems to enjoy.

He has a limited range, but what he does with that range....WOW...it's a powerful voice indeed!

Sure. However, I would not introduce a newbie via a black metal album at all. The vocals will kill it for them before they even give it a chance. Hell, it did for me. In fact, the dvd doesn't even represent tha era of the band and that is what I would expect at the fest.

Remember who your target audience is....
