for those of you that play guitar and know what your talking about, i need some help! whenever i listen to death metal around my friends they always say that 'these guys arnt even that good', they make up bullshit like they use drumming machines and dont actually play which is complete bullshit....but then my one bud who plays guitar said they dont use many 'cords' i think? anyways what should i say in response to this so i dont look like a doosh?

ok, so you should tell them to get new ears. Also, you should ask "Why should it matter whether or not they use a lot of chords?"

There's no such thing as chords in death metal. It's all power chords and arpeggios. Plus, power chords are way harder to play fast, and make heavy, strong music than with regular chords. Chords are played over and over in similar patterns, whereas power chords switch non stop for various verses in death metal, and always overdub solos. Listen to Death, and tell me they aren't fucking complex as hell.

You don't think that songwriting using the same shifting chord formation all the time (interval of a fifth) is a bit simplistic/one-dimensional?

What the heck do you mean by "same shifting chord formation"? If you simply mean that they almost exclusively use root/fifth chords then I still don't see how that renders the music simplistic or one dimensional. The complexity in a lot of death metal guitar playing lies in the scale patterns and "melodies" used, so it almost seems irrelevant to bring up what sorts of chords are used.

how something sounds is much more important than how its played. i used to think that speed and trick licks were the way to go until i smartened up. flash doesnt always equal class. so much of metal music is cliched anyways. if it sounds good it is good.

power chords rule because they have more power than reg. chords, hence the name

 :kickass:

Also, death metal guitar amps go to 11, where as normal amps only go up to 10, which is like, 1 less.

necrophagist was another band that didnt impress him, im starting to think he doesnt know what the fuck hes talking about

so im told, but i think they are fucking awesome! no matter what you think, no offense!

just put on some Cryptopsy best band period. "None so Vile", "Whisper supremacy" and "...and then you'll beg" are all awesome albums!

Atheist, Death, Demilich, Cynic, Frantic Bleep, Sleep Terror, Psycroptic, Sceptic, Martyr, etc. are good talented bands too.

but anyway if your friend don't like your music honestly why should you give a fuck? My friends don't really like metal and we speak about other things...

we were listening to bolt thrower's those once loyal, they listen to zeppelin and shit and i cant say there better than page because thatd be plain ignorant
Zep is the shit. Page may not be the most technical player in the world but who cares? The quality of music should not be judged solely (if at all) on how technical the guitarists are but on the quality of the song writing. In which case Zep destroys Bolt Thrower as well as 99% of other metal bands.
