The backing track is a song from my recent past, and Seed Awakener, I think it's eeeevil enough!

Get your corpse paint and_ your grim face on kids, we're gonna have you solo over a song from Dragonlord!!!

yes... very good... That is evil enough... :muahaha:

[QUOTE:kickass: =FretsAflame]Anyone have any freeware that one could use to impose the solo over the backing track? ;o[/QUOTE]
audacity, ardour
@steve. RAWR.   :kickass: :kickass: Can't wait for the backing track. So the rules are set now, and we are ready to go.

FretsAFlame, just drag-and-drop the file into your DAW (if you don't know what that is, Audacity until we can find you something better) and then record a solo into a second track, and then export the tracks together.

i'm definitely going to do a take.....thank god i got notice of this before the whole thing was over, as i check in only rarely :)

And here it is everybody!

www.stevesmyth.com/audio/FallenExcerpt.mp3

The backing track is an excerpt from a song I wrote for Dragonlord's Black Wings of Destiny album, called Fallen.

Key is realistically F# Harmonic Minor, with the chord scheme being D,C#sus4,C#.

The tuning I used for the song is C# Standard, on a 6 string. Lo to Hi: C#,F#,B,E,G#,C#

I don't want anyone to feel left out; if you know how to find the key of F# Harmonic Minor reasonably on the fretboard in say E or even Eb standard tuning, you can still do a solo over this! And you're not limited to using a 6 string on this either, it's just what we chose to do for the Dragonlord album.

The tempo is a slower than the original;here it is presented at 115bpm, vs. 130 something for the record, I believe. This is from the original demo I did for the record.

NOTE: THE LENGTH OF THE TRACK IS ONLY 52 SECONDS LONG! Contrary to what it says(4:52,I've tested it several times myself, and for some reason my mp3 converter labeled it as 4:52, though I did everything within the session to make sure it was only :52 long.) It's almost a minute, in my opinion long to enough to develop a good solo over!

A sample of what I did over it is located on my My Space page right now, second song on my music player(link provided below). We turned this into a bridge for the song, and when we rehearsed it, I would spend a good 5 minutes at a time, having the band keep it going for a while, and shred all over it! It's a very fun passage to shred over, but do what you feel! Let's hear what you come up with!

So, with this post now being put up here at (nearly) 2pm(PST) Thursday,October 19th,2006, let's say we'll wrap up submissions by Monday, October 23rd,2006, at 2pm (PST), and have the vote wrap up 1 week from the end of submissions, Monday October 30th,2006, at 2pm (PST). I want to give people enough time to hear all the submissions, and vote!

Speaking of submissions; send them to me: steve@stevesmyth.com and they will be posted on Monday October 23rd, as to assure everyone's submission goes up at the same time.
NOTE: WHEN YOU SEND YOUR SUBMISSION, SEND IN 1 MP3 TRACK WITH BACKING TRACK AND SOLO, AND 1 JUST THE SOLO. I'll mix it here if necessary.

( Announcer voice): "And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, we kick off the very 1st Steve Smyth Forum Solo Competition, brought to you by Snacky S'mores."( Yes, I've been watching a bit of South Park lately! )
Have fun people!   :kickass: :Smokin:
P.S. This thread is now a sticky!

If I had any kind of recording equipment... oh man... I have great ideas for that back-track.

Hey Anvil Snake,
Do you know anyone who would record you? Some form of recording device, and means of converting the track into mp3 is all you need.

shall we send you an mp3 with the whole thing, backing + solo, or just the solo without the backing? ...or both? last couple of times we did something like this on the jackson forum we always sent both the complete one and the solo only, but then again, for an isdn user like myself this takes ages to upload

for recording, i'm gonna use the microphone that i'm using while playing counter-strike. It actually sounds pretty good, i did a microphone test last night. And for converting to mp3, you just need the lame library, linked to audacity.
I personally i'm gonna try to use ardour on linux+ffmpeg, but if i don't succeed setting up the sound server in time, i will just use audacity with ffmpeg.
For the solo, I have 2 solo ideas, One of them has a leggatto pull-off run, that i need to get to speed, and if i don't get it down in time, i will just play my other idea.
