Gamers Thread

does anyone think d2 doesn't? d1 pretty much nothing from memory. ive only seen POE on twitch and dudes are just running through dungeons killing mobs and then repeating.

Well, I'd say there's "more" story in POE than D2 in the sense that the plot is of larger scope and there are more lore objects in the various levels. After the ten main acts, however, the story effectively ends, and the player is tasked with completing "maps", which are inventory items you find and use to open portals to a specific level. There are over 100 maps, which are significantly more difficult than the ten acts, and are basically designed to be grindfests which allow the player access to higher-level mobs (so the player can reach max level) and the better loot (some of which requires thousands of hours of grinding to afford). Story would basically just be a distraction at that point. It's not like people doing Baal-rushes on Hell difficulty or whatever are sitting through the end-game cinematic every time.

Keep us updated on your progress through Dark Souls.

Smoothest WoW launch ever! I’ve had minimal issues. People were already 120 less than 5 hours in on my realm! Meanwhile I am halfway to 113. I haven’t been this excited to play WoW since Mists of Pandaria tbh. The introductory quests for this have been pretty good.

Started playing Dark Souls sooner than I thought I would. I don't hate it as much as I thought I would, but I still kinda hate it. Need to git gud.

I hope you'll give a detailed report on your experiences so that we can talk more about it after you become more familiar with the game.

I'm also happy to give you tips if you need any help. A lot of the guides online aren't actually that good. Let me know what starting class you picked and what you've been doing so far.

Basically a complete summary of everything that has happened so far:

Picked warrior and a lockpick or key or something for the bonus item (forgot already). Killed some basic zombies. Saw text saying something about doing drop attacks so I fucked around trying to jump off a two foot staircase trying to kill one of the zombies with it only to give up. Went through a fog door, saw the first demon dude on the ground. Got knocked off my ledge and insta-killed by the fall since I had lost a little life fucking with the zombies. Went back to the fog but forgot entirely about the drop attack thing already. Tried just whacking the dude and running away, got hit once and then stun-locked until death. I have a strong aversion to auto-aim but figured I could make an exception for boss fights, which worked better the third time until the guy started to fly. I tried to run under him but the auto-aim just kept me stuck and then he pancaked me. That reminded me of the drop attack message, and to selectively turn auto-aim on and off, so on fourth try I killed the guy pretty effortlessly.

Then the crow took me to the town and I spent some souls on HP because I still suck at the controls. I went down an elevator and killed a bunch of defenseless zombies in a cave and then got quickly killed by an invincible ghost after crossing a bridge. I got the impression that the ghosts were summoned to punish me for killing innocent zombies. I went back to the elevator but it was still on the ground floor and I couldn't figure out how to bring it up despite there being a vaguely switch-looking thing nearby that I couldn't interact with. I said "Fuck it" and jumped down the shaft, and predictably died.

Then I took a staircase to kill some more zombies, killed a rat in a sewage drain, and even more zombies after that. There was one zombie that looked a little tougher but I wasn't expecting him to do a multi-shot combo thing, which immediately killed me. The second time he did the exact same combo but I knew to roll backwards. Fog door, killed more zombies, lit a bonfire, killed more zombies, ran into a shield and spear zombie that I couldn't figure out at all so I Googled it and realized I had forgot about kicking. Rinse and repeat a fair bit to boost my HP to around 700. Got hit by a flaming barrel although it barely even hurt me, which was relieving. Went through a fog door and had this immediate, "These cunts stuck me into a fucking boss arena" feeling, which was confirmed. I got the first drop-attack on the boss but he stun-locked and killed me immediately after. Remembered the other shield-and-spear zombies just before the bonfire, killed them, found a merchant but didn't buy anything at the time. Took a break there.

Doubt I'll beat this game because it's not remotely my thing and I imagine there will eventually be some boss fight that's just intolerable, but I'll admit that I can see the appeal. I was expecting the hitboxes to feel like shit but they're probably the best I've seen (outside of probably fighting games but I don't play those so whatevs), everything hits where it seems it should and when I don't hit where I want, I know it's because I've used the wrong attack or am in the wrong position. Easy to fuck with the enemies' attacks as well. The extremely slow level-up system is alright in that I don't really give a shit if I lose souls because I don't feel any stronger at level ~13 or whatever I am compared to level 7 when I started the area. The strict fights/consistent scripting serves well to reduce the bullshit-RNG feel, but at the same time it makes fighting the same zombies in the same ideal way extremely tedious when you can never really just ignore/run by them. I'm guessing it would take about two minutes for me to reach the boss again without wasting flasks, and if it takes me several tries to figure out the right pattern to kill him, that might be a gamebreaker right there. It also seems like pointless bullshit that both groups of shield-and-spear zombies are placed on staircases where kicking seems ineffective (or at least much more dangerous), which means I have to sit and wait for their extremely slow walk to reach even ground, or I have to kite them and risk taking needless damage in the process.

Keep going! You are almost at the point where the game opened up to me and gripped me.

Running past the enemies to get to the boss is definitely a strategy that lots of people do or they’d go insane on bosses that take attempts in the double digits.

Levelling definitely makes you much stronger. Perhaps it’s not as noticeable now, but you need certain stats to equip much more powerful weapons.

The boss that you're up to is really easy if you learned from the tutorial boss. It can be killed quite handily and mostly attacks in single hit moves that can be dodged pretty easily. I'd consider you to be a complete quitter if you couldn't figure out such a weak and slow boss enemy. Honestly, standing right in front of him with your shield up and attacking only after he misses because you're too

You'll notice more of an increase in how strong your character is after you upgrade a weapon a few times, because weapon scaling relies on the weapon's base damage to be effective and the scaling also increases on most weapons when they get upgraded. This is true even in some instances where the letter grade doesn't change.

I don't mind having to fight the boss himself a couple dozen times if that's what it takes, but I don't want to waste half an hour killing zombies that don't even strengthen my character just to get there. The problem with JRPGs is that they're designed by masochists that have been brainwashed into working 80 hours a week, 6 days a week. I'll admit I am a quitter when it comes to JRPGs with limited save opportunities. Valkyrie Profile is probably the only post-16-bit JRPG that I've played that I'd call a fun game.

Maybe you should focus on refining your approach rather than repeating it the same way each time. That's generally the best way to advance in this game.
