Ewww, I hope this analogy doesn’t end up being true if ever invest the time into Morrowind. But then I never did like SotS outside of Under a Serpent Sun and Suicide Nation.

What about Oblivion? I have that as well and it’s compatible with a controller. Some hail it is as the best ES game and I think the expansion is widely regarded as being great. The world seemed quite bland from the little I’ve played of it.

I love Oblivion ironically. Video game reviewer Yahtzee Croshaw described it as "the least immersive game ever made" or something to that effect and I agree completely. It was groundbreaking in some ways at the time of its release but it also had some bafflingly terrible ideas and I think it has aged worse than Morrowind.

For example, there are the attempts at procedurally generated conversations:

And then there's the persuasion mini-game, in which you have to "Boast", "Admire", "Joke" and "Coerce" within the span of a single conversation to raise someone's disposition with you:

@HamburgerBoy

Just because I made a new character and wanted to make it clear that I can easily kill this non-boss enemy at the minimum level. Sorry, I should have made a video for you but I was too lazy. You'll just have to take my word that it took me less than 10 minutes to kill it by a big margin even though I'm base level.

I hope that you do play this game someday and choose to evaluate it on its own merits rather than basing your opinion on misconceptions. There are surely flaws in the game, but it does a lot of things right for people who want an atypical game experience.

Thanks. I am planning on playing it eventually. fwiw I didn't base my observations entirely on that one fight, though it was the most egregious-looking I had seen.

Loved Oblivion, played hours and hours of that game, wasn't a huge fan of Skyrim though.

I've been playing X-COM: UFO Defense a lot lately and now that I've gotten the hang of it it's gone from a game I was forcing myself to like to a game I can't put down. I used to think it was too micromanagey compared to the reboot, but I've found that once you really figure out the combat the missions are actually faster than in the new games. The geoscape/battlescape balance is also much better than in the reboot series; I feel like I'm making at least as many, if not more crucial decisions in the geoscape as in the battlescape. I've restarted several times now (I play on ironman exclusively) not because of a disastrous mission (although there was one campaign I retired after a night mission where a floater I couldn't even see threw a grenade into the skyranger before I was able to properly deploy and killed my entire squad) but usually because I've wanted to adjust something about my geoscape strategy. And the game is deep as fuck; I'm constantly alt-tabbing to the fan wiki to look up stuff and I guess that isn't inherently a positive but in this case I feel more like I'm mastering something meaningfully intricate than just trying to figure out obfuscated game mechanics (though there is a bit of column B, too.)

Mainly what I miss from the reboot series is the sense of attachment you would develop to your soldiers. In UFO Defense, I've found that even with the best armor in the game soldiers will more often than not die in one shot from mutons with heavy plasma, so I've learned not to get attached since losing soldiers left and right seems unavoidable. On the other hand, the expendability of your soldiers makes it a lot easier to come back from disastrous missions with smart strategic play. So where XCOM is chiefly a tactics game, X-COM is more of a strategy game. (The hyphen distinguishes the original from the reboot series.)

So basically this is my favorite video game franchise in the world.

the combat's a lot more rudimentary, but if you like the geoscape side of x-com you should check out master of orion 2 sometime. similar kinda principle, except you're attempting to colonise as much of the galaxy as possible while dealing with various alien races attempting to do the same.

It looks sweet, I'll check it out sometime. But probably not soon because I recently started Dark Souls to shut Omni and Phylactery up. I've died my way to Undead Burg so far, seems great.

Started playing Hollow Knight again, forgot how hard this game can be. The optional dream bosses are ridiculous

It is up there with Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night, Ori and the Blind Forest, Order of Ecclesia, etc. as one of the best Metroidvania games ever.

What starting class did you choose? Not like it matters too much, since they're just templates and every character can use any item or spell equally well if you level up the stats required to use them effectively.

Wanderer. Doing a little badly though because my starter scimitar is close to breaking and I have yet to find an item shop or anything...

The pyromancer is the most OP starting class.

A friend bought Dark Souls 2: SotFS so I’ve been playing that. Trying to Coop through the game with him. Which is a bit of pain - you have to complete each area twice. I haven’t played this game since I completed it. I’m not really huge on the main game, but I’m looking forward to to the dlc areas.

Equip another weapon such as a Longsword if one has dropped. If not, go back to Firelink Shrine and down the spiral stairs and take the elevator down and grab the Estoc near the start of New Londo Ruins. Don't go too far into that area though, because it's not a good idea if you are unprepared.

There is a merchant that sells repair items near the Bonfire in the Undead Burg. He is down the stairs near the two spear wielders you can see from near the Bonfire.

Pyromancer only seems OP because you can use Pyromancy immediately, but anyone can get a Pyromancy Flame early in the game if they know where it is. That said, I almost always choose the Pyromancer because that class is the only one that's Soul Level 1.

It's possible to use Dark Bead with a Soul Level 6 Sorcerer, which makes it the real most OP starting class.

Reading about the new WoW expansion. Must. Resist. Urge. I don’t want to get sucked back into that shit.

The problem was, that raiding was my favourite part of the game and to do it properly requires commitment to a schedule which I just can’t do at the moment.

Finished the main parts of Hollow Knight and beat the hardest optional boss. Fantastic fight - but the music for that fight even better!

The game gets compared to Dark Souls a lot, which isn't really accurate, but I can see people who are fans of the Souls games liking it. Basically, just you guys play it. If you like Metroidvanias at all you will love it.
