Gamers Thread

That also bothers me. When any developer messes around with extra shit when the main game is no good.
It also pisses me off that many developers of such games put almost no effort into the main storyline.

Reading the gamespot review. I love how they make the really easy combat into a good thing, and admit but gloss over the missions being really repetitive.
Halfway through the first page they start going on about the bonus stuff. It doesn't matter a bit if the main game isn't awesome.
The review makes it sound like Rockstar delivered a competent game and people are shitting themselves.

One thing that has to be said for GTA is that the radio stuff is excellent. The ads and talk shows are fucking hilarious and the music is pretty good. Plus, the mp3 capability is awesome.

GTA4 is fucking awesome but i wish it had more of a GTA San Andreas style map with numerous amounts of cities and towns separated by vast countryside and wilderness. Also, i miss the ability to fly planes.

Just give me some interesting missions and characters tied together with a solid 'Goodfellas/The Godfather' storyline and be done with it. I really see no point in the designers putting all this effort into marginal extra features that crowd the game when the basics are still wonderfully annoying (i.e. shooting/targeting, melee system etc.)

You should definately try out Mafia, unless you already have. It's purely genius, and does to GTA what an F-16 does to a pointed stick.

TBH, I'm really enjoying GTA4, and a lot more than I expected to. Of course, it plays a lot like...well, a GTA game (like...duh), but it's distilled and perfectly polished. No, the shooting isn't as good as in an FPS, no the melee isn't as good as a beat 'em up, and no the driving isn't as good as Forza 2 (though it shits over anything that the burnout series has produced)...but there's seemless integration from one to the other and as a whole it's not only unseemly amounts of fun, but there's also so much dark humour and detail only a curmudgeon would deny that this is one excellent game.

You see the thing is that it is far from 'perfectly polished'. The driving has improved tenfold, I'll agree there, however the combat mechanics are barely passable. The writing is good, but it is no Psychonauts or even Portal.

If only Rockstar would have added these things, the gameplay would have improved exponentially IMO:

-third person shooter controls a la Gears of War/Uncharted etc. (i.e. left stick moves/strafes your character while the right stick aims)
-rechargeable health (at the very least the ability to store spare burgers or what have you to heal yourself mid-battle).

It is a fun game, but really nothing much has changed in it since GTA3 from what I have played so far (15 hoursish), which, tbh, is quite disappointing.

Just got home from a Magic tournament: The Shadowmoor release tourney.

Got second place, won 9 packs. I was pleased.

Woohoo! :goggly:
