Ghost: I must be in the extreme minority...

Quick question: Does anyone know if they really are Satanists?? I'm leaning toward no, because most people who claim to be Satanists explain that their religion has more to do with Paganism.. and all of their songs are goofy as all shit, but I thought I'd ask.

It's obviously a gimmick and not a sincere belief. The over the top pseudo-Satanism is part of their appeal.

Yeah, I just figured I'd ask.. XD You never know!

EDIT: I once worked with a Satanist. As goofy as this shit is, you'd be surprised how many take it seriously.

As someone who memorized the guitars and vocals of practically every MF (and KD) song as a teen, they're not ripping them off, but I do hear the influence, strong influence in some songs more than others. I think they're pretty good, kinda like the retro sound, but I wondered how much of it was based on the appearance. Don't care for the Satanism message, regardless of whether they really are Satanists, of which ever variety, LaVeyan, Luciferian etc or not. Most are similar to earth/pagan religions. Their whole presentation is a bit funny, but also interesting. Kinda like watching a WWE wrestler in make up or war paint mixed with more mystique.

I don't get this band either. I don't hate them, but to me it just sounds alright, nothing special, but then to my surpise lots of people love them.

I find it interesting how so many people comment on that part of the band. A lot of the satanic imagery and such that is a part of the band is so obviously tongue and cheek.

Exactly. I don't think they sound much like them, but the tone and some of the riffs definitely have MF influence.

I get the feeling a majority of the "don't get it's" here are taking them too seriously. It's just good metal by musicians wearing their influences on their sleeves, chests, mitres, etc. Sit back, crack open a black kettle brew and enjoy! This is not a band to be over-analyzed...so much of this reminds me of the Witchcraft hub-bub from a few years back...is it ground-breaking, earth-shattering? No, just enjoyable metal of the 70's variety, of which there just isn't enough goddammit. But, if you guys and gals are looking for a retro band to take seriously, seek out Spiritual Beggars, maybe there you'll find yesteryear bliss...

I can't believe how many of the people on this board are in the "don't get it" category. This is right up this forum's alley, I would think. It borders between rock and metal, it's got Satan, and the songs are almost instantly memorable and sing-along-able.

Plus, the live show is something all should see when they come around with Enslaved. Seriously. It might change your opinion.

There's plenty of folks here who have expressed an undying love for AOR-bands, 70's rock bands, etc. As fun as it is to pigeonhole this place as prog nerd central, we all know that's not quite the truth...for most of us, anyway. Like he said, the songs are borderline rock/metal, really, really catchy choruses, over the top cheese, etc. I find it strange too. If the songs were about fairies instead of Satan, I think more people here would be into them (and everyone everywhere else wouldn't be!)

I don't hear it in the vocals, but that's maybe because the vocals sound SO MUCH like BOC, it's hard to see any other vocal similarities.

I like you, so no offense, but have you actually listened to Blue Oyster Cult? The bands sound nothing alike. In fact, even though they don't sound like MF either, I'd agree that they're far more similar than they are to BOC.

Ghost has a sound that's very similar to BOC, only they're singing about Satan instead of UFOs and Godzilla. I'd also throw Angel Witch and Cloven Hoof into the mix, more so than Mercyful Fate at least.
