I like Master of Puppets, but it has nothing on Melissa to me. Master of Puppets is too inconsistent and masturbatory to compete with an album like Melissa.

Well, I think the important thing to remember here is that these albums mentioned are amongst the highest echelons of metal albums produced.

I don't hate Metallica or anything (any of the following three would probably make my top 10 for that year) but I can barely even remember any song from KeA after the first three. And The Four Horsemen I just find really lethargic and overlong after hearing Mustaine's version.

Melissa was pretty much the definition of masturbatory for its time. Over-the-top showy vocals, riffs piled on riffs just to show they can, lots of fancy shredding guitar, Mercyful Fate was basically the exact kind of thing that led to the creation of an album Master of Puppets.

I have no idea how a song like Jump in the Fire or Seek & Destroy doesn't get caught in a person's head after just a few listens btw.

the last three songs are more or less a similar standard IMO and there arguably isn't a single mediocre tune (ok maybe the bass solo), but yeah, the peaks are a little mild and they're already at the point of songs not quite justifying their length (which of course becomes more of a problem later). i'll always take an ambitious, intermittently great mess like, say, ...AJFA over an album like that, but 'tis high quality comfort food for me.

and yeah, MELISSA has incredible musicianship and attitude, but it feels more geared toward showcasing that with as much flamboyance and shooed in riffage as possible, rather than sustaining a dreamy/epic feeling the way the more natural, fluid DBtO does. there's plenty of overlap between the two albums but the sensibility of MELISSA seems more in line with balls-out spontaneous guitar rock whereas DBtO is more in line with mid-'80s epics. even if MELISSA is the more crazy or heavy or badass album, OATH is the one that transports me and moves me a lot more frequently.

Maybe I'm thinking of "masturbatory" in a different sense.

Melissa is a tight 40 minutes long and as flashy and cocky as it might be in the areas you mentioned, at least it doesn't overstay it's welcome or have any fat to trim, whereas Master of Puppets is roughly 55 minutes long and many of the tracks could really do with some trimming, it meanders quite a bit.

The album is nearly an hour long and it doesn't need to be. Whether that means you trim songs or remove a few songs, I just happen to think a thrash metal album with three 8 minute songs (one is an instrumental) and the shortest song being roughly 5 minutes long is rather masturbatory and hedonistic, were they unable to help themselves in the studio?

I don't feel Master of Puppets is a masterpiece, or even Kill 'em All, but I do think both are great albums. I consider Ride the Lightning to be a masterpiece though.
