10.) King's X - Tape Head
King's X is weird. Some of their stuff is metal, most not. They are way too good of a band to not be put on a list.
Great year for power metal and gothic metal... which means next to none of my nominations are making the list
You said that already, although you amended your statement by saying gothic metal in general rather than gothic doom, probably to account for Theatre of Tragedy - Aégis, which does not have any doom in it. In fact, the overall metalness of that album is rather debatable, enough to call into question whether I should even put it on my top ten rather than giving that spot to something else. I had no such qualms about including Velvet Darkness They Fear for 1996, because only an idiot would think that was barely even metal. Then again, vilden put Katatonia - Discouraged Ones in his #3 spot, and I wouldn't even call that a metal album, more heavy alternative rock really.
Maybe you were also considering Tristania - Widow's Weeds, which I think merits an honourable mention, but I'm not sure about it making the top ten. I've found it to be the weakest of the first three, even though it has the best artwork, they had a cooler logo there than what they've used ever since, and it's the only one with any doominess in it.
If @Dak does this I have a feeling Mercenary will hold the top spot on his list.
So far I've not had a year where there wasn't good genre diversity, looking back over my 90's year lists now (I keep them listed on my profile for easy reference) and there's a ton of doom, power metal, death metal, some grindcore, some trad/epic.
