GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1998

Man, I've tried to get into Obscura for years. I try my best, but I just don't understand it. I've listened to it twice now for this poll, and it's still not hitting the spot for me. What am I missing? There's a few good songs like Nostalgia but for the most part it's just...annoying. To me, Gorguts was at their best with Considered Dead.

Its a kind of hard to get into album(its sooo dense and layered), i dont think i know anyone who liked it after only a spin or two. It didnt click with me at first either, but now i consider it a death metal landmark. You should check out The Erosion to Sanity if you haven't.

I love Obscura and it probably won't make my list for this year because there are too many albums that I like more than it. It is a pretty weird and cool album.

no way you "love" it if it doesn't even crack your top 10, unless this was some kind of godly year for you.

This is one of the best years for me, but thanks for trying to tell me how I feel about something. Clearly you would know better than me.

1. Runemagick - The Supreme Force of Eternity
The Chasm - Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph
Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes
Incantation - Diabolical Conquest
Gorguts - Obscura
Suffocation - Despise the Sun
Meshuggah - Chaosphere
Dawn - Slaughtersun (Crown of the Triarchy)
Morbid Angel - Formulas Fatal to the Flesh
Mortem - The Devil Speaks in Tongues
Amon Amarth - Once Sent From the Golden Hall
Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding
Death - The Sound of Perseverance

I’m surprised Diabolical Conquest hasn’t made many lists so far! Probably my favourite Incantation.

1998 is definitely one of my favourite years, but there’s still a clear number one for me. I’ve also really come to appreciate the Dawn record in recent times more than ever before and now consider it a flawed masterpiece. “The Knell and the World” isn’t even a top 3 track from it imo!

I see like 2 or 3 timeless albums and then straight mediocrity and some of you guys say a great year. Maybe the bar is too high
