GMD Social Poll: Top Ten Films of 1996

1. Thesis [Tesis] - Alejandro Amenabar
2. Lone Star - John Sayles
3. Fargo - Joel Coen
4. Trainspotting - Danny Boyle
5. A Moment of Innocence aka Bread and Flowers [Noon e Goldoon] - Mohsen Makhmalbaf
6. Scream - Wes Craven
7. Crash - David Cronenberg
8. The English Patient - Anthony Minghella

Not a particularly deep year. Thesis is definitely my top pick- such a tense, grimy Argento influenced thriller without the cartoonish elements of giallo. Amenabar never came close to matching it.

glad someone mentioned lone star and a moment of innocence, both great.

I think it was you that recommended the latter to me when we were talking about Persian cinema.

I think a lot of people here would like Lone Star. A mystery that unravels itself through really well-structured flashbacks, but a bit like Memories of Murder and its ilk, the resolution of the mystery is less important than the personal evolution of the characters.

1. The Substitute
2. The Ghost and the Darkness
3. From Dusk till Dawn
4. The Quest
5. Bad Moon
6. Michael Collins
7. Executive Decision
8. The Fan
9. Escape from L.A.
10. Muppet Treasure Island
