Going to London

I wasn't asking for information about Europe mainly because it's a family vacations, and I'm just tagging along. I'm heading to Antwerp, Belgium; Paris, France; Ulm, Germany; and Venice, Italy.

What are you going to be doing for 10 months, just out of interest? Studying? Working? You'll have a great time. I don't live in London myself, but do think it is a fantastic city. I wouldn't mind living there for a year or two at some point, but it really is bloody expensive.

We don't do too well in terms of underground metal bands touring in this country, but when they do, they inevitably play London (and often only London).

I'll be studying at UC London, and it's going to be double expensive for me. Since in the midwest we make some of the lowest wages, and then leaving to go where everything costs me double.... fuck!

Should be a great time :kickass:

Aren't you heading to the Warning/Pagan Altar show? I probably see you there! Demilich will come if he doesn't decide to be a faggot.

good luck with London, at least the airport. I will never at least connect thru London. I did so going to and from Europe this year as part of a 3 week vacation in Czech republic, germany, and holland. Both ways, I ended up spending a night in the Heathrow airport. Once, there was a security issue going on which caused all flights to be cancelled and once, the weather mucked things up.

:ill: o_O :erk:

If I lived anywhere in Europe, I'd make it to that gig.

No lie - my train ticket to London Stanstead airport cost MORE money than the flight to Slovenia.

Yeah, people keep on trying to blow up our airports. I flew abroad 4 times last year, and the security got more and more stringent every time I went. Pain in the arse.

UCL? What are you studying? My sister is starting a PhD there this year. Cool stuff. As for bars etc., London is a very big place, there are an awful lot if you look carefully. I'm around all the time you're here, so if you want some pointers just get in touch.

For London, most of the underground metal shows are played at the Camden Underworld. So head to Camden, especially on a weekend, when the market is running (get yourself a bikers jacket), beer is flowing (try the Tetleys draught), and there's always some metal gig on.

They switch around a lot nowadays, the Unerworld still gets a fair few, but you can expect to find metal gigs on in the Barfly, Roundhouse, Purple Turtle, Mean Fiddler, Electric Ballroom, Islington Academy, Brixton Academy, Scala, Koko and Forum. There are several a week on average at the moment, but arguably not that many worth going to ;)

Camden is a good place to go though, but if you're here for a while there's lots to explore, depending what you're into :)

I know what you're saying. The "Webster Theater", which is like 35 minutes away in Hartford, has a metal show literally almost every night. Probably five a week, but these are the shittiest of shitty bands. The last time I went there was to see HORSE the Band, and you couldn't imagine how terrible the opening and headlining acts were. The headliner was an industrial band headed by Wes Borland (of Limp Bizkit fame )... we stuck around for half of the first song just to see how terrible it was.

Yes UCL, and I'll be studying Chemical Engineering. I'll PM you or bump this thread when I get over there in the 8th of August.

When do you move to Amsterdam?

No more flying into/out of London for me, I had to sleep overnight twice during my recent Europe trip be it for security issues or the weather, I will visit London but I will not use that airport again unless I have to do so.

I like beer and women. Tell me where to go. :Spin:
Go to Amsterdam.

London is cool, but not my cup of tea (bad pun intended). Essentially, it's like NYC, with less intensity and more history. I'm glad we went and spent two days walking around (must have walked 10 - 14 miles each day) seeing the city, but I don't feel a burning desire to return any time soon.

London is a place -- like many -- which people would enjoy more if they have a bunch of real locals to hang out with. This way you avoid the tourists. There is an entire life outside of the sights and drunken tourists....but you need to be on the inside loop.

Otherwise, it's completely opened itself up to all these EU nations now of people coming in on weekends to drink and see the sights. London at street level is nuts.

Had you guys come over when I used to live there, it would have been a different story, but you know, it's not what it used to be.

Way way too many East Europeans in London now. Too many South Africans and Aussies too. Somehow they can all afford to live there when real Londoners are being priced out.

Amsterdam, well, what can you say? :tickled: Light up and chill out. To hell with the tulips. Couldn't live there though, but good for an occasional weekend.

No doubt. Though, that's probably true of almost any big city you visit; better if you have a local to show you the way.

Amsterdam was cool, but I have no desire to go back there either. A place has to really blow me away, to make me want to go back, before I see other places I've never seen. Which tells you pretty much all you need to know about Playa del Carmen, Mexico, which we vacationed in four years in a row.

You just wait 'til you get to Hawaii.

5 times and counting. :kickass:
