Good Emperor album to start out with?

yes, Anthems is the best place to start, but with much patience Nightside will overall reveal itself to be the most rewarding Emperor album. Haven't heard any of the pre-Nightside material though, with the exception of the 2 songs on "Scattered Ashes" (one of which is re-recorded on Nightside)

Emperor's pre-Nightside stuff owns any of their full-lengths (which suck for the most part)
How can anyone think that poorly written, clich'ed black metal of their demos could compare on any level the deep, intense, intracate, intelligent full lengths is beyond me...

Nightside: Some good ideas but they're all run into the ground. The album doesn't really flow, and it's shittily produced.
Anthems+Prometheus: cheesy + devoid of atmosphere, structure or purpose

Wrath of the Tyrant and the Enslaved split were both quite innovative.

I generaly respect your opinions but sometimes they seem so contradictory. Anthems is cheesy? I mean I could see how someone would say this but not a Summoning fan (keep in mind I'm a fan of Summoning too, so I'm not bashing them. I'm just saying their lyrical content, themes, songwriting and use of keyboards has infanate times more cheese then anything on Anthems or Prometheus). Anthems is extreemly atmospheric and the songs have phenominal and unqiue strutures which do an excellent job revealing the different layers within the mind of a Satanist. Prometheus is a concept album, and though far from the greatest the music tends to fit in with the events very well. To say it is deviod of struture of purpose is nothing short of naive.

Agreed. Remember, maybe he just doesn't get anything out of post-ITNE Emperor. I don't really get anything out of WOTT, so there. I do maintain that Anthems hardly lacks structure, and isn't really cheesy, but whatever.

btw, is that Jennifer Love Hewitt in your avatar? If so: DAY-AMN!

Am I the only person (poser?) who doesn't think much at all of ITNE?
I Am The Black Wizards and Inno A Satana are classics but the rest of it is fairly underwhelming in my opinion.

Also, Ishahn and Samoth wrote Anthems For The Welkin At Dusk when they were my age (20). This makes me sad.

Barrghh.

It's chaotic without being coherent. There are meandering passages which seem to be there for the sake of it. There is no real purpose or direction, just riffs pasted together a lot of the time. There's the odd good riff, but when you place a good riff in between two over-the-top cheesy ones, it doesn't sound so great. The synth/keyboards are just irritating, not even remotely atmospheric. Clean vocals - ditto.

To me it sounds like the riffs are pasted together. Even earlier albums are guilty of this. Regardless of this, it's just dull and predictable 2/3 note blasting guitar riffing mixed with cheesy keyboards and pointless tempo changes. The melodies are often obvious attempts to appeal to a more mainstream audience. The cheesiness and the lack of structure and atmosphere means that the music doesn't express the emotion which Emperor aimed for. Some (not many) parts are aesthetically sound, but the emotion isn't there. They're impressive technically, but if one wants technical ability they'll listen to jazz.

Heh, ditto for Eucharist writing A Velvet Creation when they were about my age (15/16).

Are you serious? That's intense!

I was always impressed by Sepultura and their age when Schizophrenia and BTR came out.
