I voted for Death. Why you ask? IMO Death is the only American metal band who kept their sound interesting throughout their entire career. That may be in part to the constant flow of fresh musicians through the Death lineup (and even more in part to Chuck's brilliance), but none the less, no other American metal band released as many masterpieces in their career's time - especially on such a consistent basis.

My vote goes to Type O Negative or Guns N' Roses, although that's more heavy rock than metal.

personally i never took american metal too seriously(there are exceptions of course).....hmmm....probably the only thing i really care about american metal is that it brought a genius in james murphy.
other american metal influences are (apart from the styles) morbid angel.....cannibal corpse...immolation to name few.
