In The Nightside Eclipse
/thread

Honorable mention: Blood Fire Death, Anthems To The Welkin, Prometheus
Don't have too much BM, though...

Well, there are a lot of great black metal releases from more recent and lesser known bands. Some of the other guys here are more schooled in this area; but if we're talking more well-known and influential black metal, I'd say:

Emperor- Anthems to the Welkin At Dusk
Immortal- Battles in the North
Celtic Frost- To Mega Therion
Venom- Black Metal
Bathory- Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Darkthrone- Transilvanian Hunger

Most of these are considered important and influential in the genre.

EDIT: ninja'd by InFlames. Shouldn't have thought so hard about not including Ulver.

By the way, Ulver is really cool. They're just not straight black metal; they have a lot of ambient and folk influences, so I didn't include them. You might dig them though.

And I take it you already know Burzum, since your name is "free Varg"

I'll add...

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice
Immortal - Pure Holocaust

I'd choose 'Autumn Aurora' over 'Blood in our Wells' for Drudkh myself, but I know a lot of people disagree.

Ulver ~ Bergtatt

I choose Nattens Madrigal over Bergtatt. Though that 5th song off Bergtatt I Fjend is great, Number 3 song on it is very good as well, I just wondered why a gunshot went off in the song and why someone is breathing hard walking inthe woods on that song.

There is a TON of stuff that is better than most classics that to many people overlook.

Peste Noire-La Sanie des siècles - Panégyrique de la dégénérescence ranks as one of the absolute best black metal records ever, regardless if it came out in 2004.

My personal BM classics:

Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God
Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires Circumspace
The Ruins Of Beverast - Unlock The Shrine
Negura Bunget - Om
I Shalt Become - Wanderings
Xasthur - To Violate The Oblivious

Bathory- Under The Sign Of The Black Mark
Beherit- Drawing Down the Moon
Darkthrone- Under A Funeral Moon/Transylvanian Hunger
Graveland- Thousand Swords
Absurd- Facta Loquuntur
Mercyful Fate- Don't Break The Oath/Melissa
Blut Aus Nord- The Work Which Transforms God
Burzum- Hvis lyset tar oss
Sacramentum- Far Away From the Sun
Dolorian- When All The Laughter Has Gone

Horribly generic list, but that is probably for good reason, as all of these albums reek of excellence.
