The "10 essential death metal albums" thread was a rather interesting one, so I figured I'd make such a thread for black metal albums too (yes, I know that similar threads have been made some time ago).

These records are a must if you're into black metal, in my opinion:

Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Gehenna - Seen Through The Veils Of Darkness (Second Spell)
Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times
Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldí
Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon
Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia
Dimmu Borgir - Stormblåst
Immortal - Pure Holocaust

I'm probably going to get bashed for having a too "mainstream" list. Which probably is true. I love the abovementioned albums, though, no matter how mainstream they are :p I also like Taake, Ragnarok, Carpathian Forest, Vesania, early Ulver and also more "raw" black metal, but these are my favourites..

Screw that, man. "Mainstream" isn't always a bad thing; just most of the time.

Those bands and their albums are definately not mainstream. If it's never been on the Billboards, then it's not mainstream. But that's just me.

Well, if by "mainstream" they mean shitty, they're assholes. Emperor and Darkthrone are two of my favorite black metal acts ever, and Immortal is high up there.

Some losers that had failed black metal bands of their own think that if more than ten people like you you're a sold-out mainstream pop-band. Fuck them.

As for my favorite black metal albums of all time, I will say this in advance:

I don't give a flying fuck if you think my selections are mainstream garbage or not. As this is MY fucking list, you can go blow your mother. Thank you.

1. In the Nightside Eclipse - Emperor
2. From the Cradle to Enslave - Cradle of Filth
3. Behemoth - From the Pagan Vastlands
4. Enslaved - Frost
5. Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
6. Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
7. Nargaroth - Herbestleyd
8. Marduk - World Funeral
9. Venom - Black Metal
10. Mayhem - Deathcrush

Master's Hammer - Ritual (that is THE black metal for me, they are taking the piss lyric-wise, but even the old school black metal bands from Norway admit they took a lot of inspiration from this band)
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
Limbonic Art - In Abhorrence Dementia
Summoning - Lugburz
Hate Forest
Burzum
old Dimmu was half-decent, Manes, Ulver, ...
... hmm I can't come up with 10, they aren't good enough...

Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
Nokturnal Mortum - Lunar Poetry
Nokturnal Mortum - To The Gates Of Blasphemous Fire
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
Dissection - Storm Of The Light's Bane
Obtained Enslavement - Witchcraft
Obtained Enslavement - Soulblight
Satyricon - Rebel Extravaganza
Free Slot for all the rest

Interesting thread....

My choices, in no particular order:

Burzum-"Balder's Dod"(I realize this is an unlikely choice for many Burzum purists, and I'm probably a little bias since I'm not such a huge fan of the "raw" black-metal sound, but to me, this is their best album)

Limbonic Art-"In Abhorrence Dementia"(A vastly underrated masterpiece)

Ulver-"Nattens Madrigal"

Dimmu Borgir-(tie)"Enthrone Darkness Triumphant," "Stormblast," and "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia"

Cradle of Filth-"Cruelty and the Beast"

Arcturus-"Aspera Heims Symfonia"

Destroyer 666-"Phoenix Rising"

I can't think of anything else, so these six will have to do...

It is a great album. Some of the keyboard melodies are unearthly. I wish somone could make music like that without the shrieks and loud guitars (I don't mind the programmed drums, I like them a lot), it would be a truly ambient and atmospheric masterpiece.

Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Sacramentum - Far Away From the Sun
Summoning - Dol Guldur
Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger
Nargaroth - Black Metal Ist Krieg
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon
Destroyer 666 - Unchain the Wolves
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

Darkthrone-Under A Funeral Moon
Nokturnal Mortum-NeChrist
Graveland-Thousand Swords
Sacramentum-Far Away from the Sun
Dissection-The Somberlain
Darkthrone-Transilvanian Hunger
Burzum-Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Gorgoroth-Pentagram
Satyricon-Dark Medieval Times
Judas Iscariot-Dethroned, Conquered and Forgotten
Blut Aus Nord-Memoria Vertusta
Nokturnal Mortum-Lunar Poetry
Moonblood split with Deathspell Omega.

I agree. I'm not a huge fan of the "demonic" vocals either, but the music more than makes up for it.

"Destroyer 666-"Phoenix Rising"

hahahaha see? See, motherfucker who INSISTS that Destroyer666 is NOT black metal? Huh? Three against one. Destroyer666 IS black metal, and you're just a fucking loser. So there. *is satisfied*

Ok sorry.

3. Behemoth - From the Pagan Vastlands

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

aye, i can only second that one man, great cd that not many seem to know of

Yea, that is a great fucking album. I sort of miss the fact that Behemoth have begun to steer to a more death metal sound. Don't get me wrong, they're still a great fucking band, but I miss songs like From the Pagan Vastlands and Moonspell Rites etc.

I'm trying to get ahold of their first ever demo tape. I heard it was horrible quality but it'd be great to own just because. Anyone know where to look? I hear there's only like a thousand copies :S
