I'm relatively new to the field of Black Metal, so I thought it might be a good idea to nick the Death Metal-thread and make it my personal Black Metal-thread. I own most of the stuff modern Black Metal bands claim to have as major influences (like Bathory, Celtic Frost, Venom...) plus Darkthrone's A Blaze In The Northern Sky & Transylvanian Hunger, Marduk's Panzer Division Marduk & Fuck Me Jesus and Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse. Oh, and Dissection's The Somberlain & Storm Of The Light's Bane if these count as Black Metal. What should I get next? I'd really appreciate any kind of recommendations. But please do not list more than 10 albums each one of you as I am no Croesus!
...Oh, if this is of any help to you - I like Marduk and Dissection best. Darkthrone are cool but to me nothing more than a nice addition to my collection 'cause all they do is to combine Bathory and Celtic Frost and let this mixture rip out of the speakers with twice as much power.

I'd look into Satyricons Nemesis Divina and possibly some Burzum. Limbonic Art and Valhalla are two other Black Metal bands I think are good. Oh Yeah, Maniac Butcher too.

As everytime it comes to this topic, it's a matter of personal taste, anyways, here are some recommendations:

  • Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
  • Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
  • Nagelfar - Hünengrab im Herbst
  • Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi
  • Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
  • Taake - Nattestid Ser Porten Vid
  • Ulver - Bergtatt & Nattens Madrigal
  • Burzum - Filosofem

My picks:

Burzum-Hvis Lysett Tar Oss
Mayhem-De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Limbonic Art-Moon in the Scorpio (their only essential release)
Satyricon-Dark Medieval Times
Carpathian Forest-Black Shinning Leather
Emperor-Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Nokturnal Mortum-Ne Christ
Sigh-Scorn Defeat
Beherit-Drawing Down the Moon and/or The Oath of Black Blood
Absu-Tara

and you must pick up Panzerfaust and Under a Funeral Moon by Darkthrone

Trollech - V rachotu hromu
Black Candle - The Faceless Angel
Triumphator - Wings of Antichrist
Malignance- Regina Umbrae Mortis
Vicious Crusade - Forbidden Tunes
Enochian Crescent - Omega Telocvovim
Belphegor - Lucifer Incestus
Magane - Beginning at the End
Vordven - Woodland Passage
RA - Geniu pustiu

Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Ulver - Bergtatt or Nattens Madrigal if you like the more brutal stuff.
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Taake - Nattestid Ser Porten Vid
Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta I - Fathers Of The Icy Ages
Windir - Arntor
Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia
Astriaal - Renascent Misanthropy (not really essential, but it's one of my favorite bm releases)
Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dust

Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God
Deathspell Omega - Inquisitors of Satan
Antaeus - Cut your Flesh and Worshp Satan
Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon
Nokturnal Mortum - Lunar Poetry
Abyssic Hate - Suicial Emotions
Moonblood - Blut Und Krieg
Gontyna Kry - Welowie
Vlad Tepes + Belketre - March to the Black Holocaust(split)
Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun

Moonblood has been getting good praise. I like Aborym, and Mayhem. I need some of these recommendations too. Everyone's seemed to agree on Emperor, Satyricon.

Fire Walk With Us, Aborym.

Good? Certainly Emperor were once. Haven't heard much Satyricon.

Essential? Nuh uh, nothing I've heard by either band is essential.

Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger
Immortal - Battles In The North
Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
Burzum - Aske
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Graveland - The Celtic Winter
Abigor - Nachthymnen
Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times

Forget "Anthems..." and Satyricon. Emperor is a secondary band, when and if you get their material, get "In the Nightside Eclipse" and "Wrath of the Tyrant". "Anthems..." isn't even black metal. I've not been the least bit impressed by any Satyricon I've heard.

Hmmm, so far most votes go out for Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor, Immortal, Mayhem and Satyricon. Despite your complaints, Demiurge, hahaha.
Anyway, I'd like to thank everyone who contributed so far. Just one thing: please do not recommend stuff to me that I already have! You don't have to convince me of those as I wouldn't own 'em if I didn't like 'em. Sounds logic, doesn't it?

I'll give this one a shot...

Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter
Dissection - The Somberlain
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Enslaved - Mardraum: Beyond the Within
Enslaved - Below the Lights
Borknagar - Quintessence
Sacramentum - The Coming of Chaos
Melechesh - Sphinx
Arthemesia - Devs Iratvs

Ten of my faves.

Necromantia- Black Arts Leads To Everlasting Sins
Burzum- Det Som Engang Var
Graveland- The Celtic Winter
Summoning- Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame
Moonblood- Blut and Krieg
Beherit- Drawing Down the Moon
Mütiilation- Remains of a Ruined, Dead, Cursed Soul
Bathory- Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Darkthrone- Transivanian Hunger
Emperor- Wrath of the Tyrant
This is a good list, except I would put:

Necromantia - Scarlet Evil Witching Black
Graveland - Thousand Swords
summoning - Dol Guldur
Mutiilation - Vampires of Black Imperial blood

Instead of the albums by the same bands on the list.
