Guilty Pleasures

David Bowie

I suspect that man is responsible for 90% of the non-metal stuff I listen to. I had overlooked his work for years because I had associated him only with stuff like "Let's Dance" and "Modern Love." Eventually I checked out his pre-1980's material, and he is now one of my all-time favorite artists. So many awesome and forward-thinking songs.

I saw someone mention Molly Hatchet, and while I don't think they qualify as "pop" I have to admit to having a severe guilty pleasure for Southern Rock. Everything from Molly Hatchet, The Outlaws, Doc Holliday, Blackfoot, The Allman Brothers, up to & including the Georgia Satellites...who were at least popular for a little while there... :)

I love the fact that you added the + signs. :kickass:

Back in the day, you really HAD to, to avoid confusion.

"Have you seen Live?"

"WHO live?"

"No, LIVE!"

"WHO live?! Which BAND, damnit!"

"No, not The Who, Live!"

("Who's pitching? "Tomara!" :))

I spent a lot of time in the 90's trying to figure out names of songs on the radio that I liked. This one took me 3 years. Lol!

Well, y'know, they DO use those words in the song. Like, 20 times.

put me down for some Jamiroquai

I've got one of their CDs and remember liking at least one of their songs.
I also remember working local crew for a show of theirs at the old International Ballroom in Doraville...where, before the show, they were throwing around a frisbee or something from the roof of their tour-bus. (!)

I like some Southern rock, pretty much the more 'interesting' songs like Blackfoot's "Morning Dew" and some from Molly Hatchett...not so much the Allmans. Hmm, "Morning Dew".......that's one I need to scare up on the Intarwebs. :heh:

Same. Only some Molly Hatchett, Axe, and Blackfoot intrest me as far as Southern Rock goes. "Morning Dew" was on Vertical Smiles, which along with Siogo were released to CD by Wounded Bird Records several years ago. They're still in their catalog, and they're both listed on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_m?url=search-alias=popular&field-keywords=blackfoot

I wasn't a fan of Vertical Smiles, but Siogo was, IMO, the last great Blackfoot release. Drivin' Fool just rocks.....

re: your link: Holy shit, when did No Reservations & Flyin' high come out on cd....Where's that credit card, dammit..... :D

You know that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you think you're probably one of 50 people on the planet who would remember some old obscure records, but then they crop up in someone else's conversation?

I just got that warm fuzzy :) I still have No Reservations and Flyin' High on vinyl. Strikes is my favorite Blackfoot CD, though.

I also have all the old Molly Hatchett and Outlaws records, too!

Ken

Blu Cantrell - Hit 'Em Up Style (it's SOOOOO pop but I just LOVE IT)
Clarence Carter - Strokin'
The Nylons
Ditto JDub on the Georgia Satellites - change in my pocket man!
ChumbaWumba - Tubthumping (it's so bad but I can't stop loving it)

I'm sure there are more - plenty that Yip hits skip on when they come up in the random play list :)

Styx's pseudo-prog-rock made an impact and it probably a direct reason I listen to metal.

Same with me…and I don’t think we have to feel guilty about it! Along with bands like Kansas, Foreigner, Journey, and Boston, I think they helped pave the way for the great music that we listen to now! Here is some stuff that I *do* feel kinda guilty about:

Adam Ant – Goody Two Shoes
Animotion – Obsession
C.W. McCall – Convoy
Chic – Le Freak
Captain & Tennile – Love Will Keep Us Together
Devo – Whip It
Rick James – Super Freak
The Knack – My Sharona
Lipps, Inc. – Funkytown
Olivia Newton-John - Magic
Sweet – Fox On the Run
Tears for Fears – Shout
Terry Jacks – Seasons in the Sun (OK, this one is EXTRA guilty, as it still makes me :waah:!)

Oh, and I also like the rap versions of “Walk this Way” and “Crazy Train”.

I've been listening to Yoko Kanno's music a lot lately, so her, though that's nothing to feel guilty about (and I don't) since she makes some damn good music.

Also been listening to a band called Fire Bomber from the anime Macross 7. That, and I like a lot of other anime songs alot.

ooooooh.

"Let them truckers roll, 10-4!" :)

Tears for Fears – Shout

I was thinking of this one just the other day. Great song, great album actually. (Songs From the Big Chair)

Terry Jacks – Seasons in the Sun (OK, this one is EXTRA guilty, as it still makes me :waah:!)

Oddly enough, that song has appeared on a few "Worst songs EVER" lists, but I didn't think it was THAT bad. Ever heard the original recording? I did, in my elementary school Music Appreciation class. Very sad indeed.

Now, Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight" really did belong at the top of the Worst Songs Ever list!

For one, this shows your age :goggly: and for two... I'm just glad you didn't put down Barry Manilow!

Some of these songs I'll admit liking at one time... for example I have the Xanadu album with Olivia Newton-John and ELO from my childhood...and I used own a 45 with "Convoy".

But Terry Jacks?? He's part of the group of songs and artists I call "SSS" - Sappy Seventies Songs! :yuk: I'm just glad you didn't say Starland Vocal Band! :hypno:

Hmmmm...don't think I knew there were multiple versions!

:p to you for making fun of my age! And I actually DID like a couple of Barry Manilow tunes, but not enough to buy a whole album.

Also, did you know that Xanadu was made into a Broadway production? (Assuming it's still playing...) I saw it in NY in 2007, and it was a hoot. However, I probably wouldn't recommend it unless someone was really into the move and/or soundtrack back in the day. (Which I was!)

70s
ABBA

80s
Poison
Twisted Sister

70s: I actually like ABBA as well. I saw Mama Mia in Las Vegas a few years ago, and I saw the movie version when it came out last summer.

80s: No need to feel "guilty" about liking Twisted Sister...Dee Snider kicks ass! Poison, on the other hand...
