Guitar tracking

I'm not calling anyone out who does it, I just personally have never done it and I don't see my self doing it. It makes complete sense to do it, and it really isn't that much different than doing a whole pass and then cleaning up mistakes with punch in/outs. I would probably have no problem doing it for other bands I record to save time, but for me personally I don't know if I would do it.

Also, I don't compose and record at the same time, so maybe that's another reason I haven't done it. It sounds like a good idea, just one I've never thought about doing I guess.

Plus, recording for me is my biggest "training ground" to really dig in and prepare myself to play the songs in a live setting. The dynamics are so different from stage to studio and nailing my parts in complete takes just gives me more confidence to know that from there on out, I'll be better equipped to handle the music live.

i too am not a fan of it but sometimes to get a point across you have to use it. and it's not something that present metal bands are doing it has been done since the late 60s early 70s but they used a razor blade instead.

i like a mix of the two methods, normally i do the song in sections, ie verse chorus etc, just to make sure its uber tight, but if somethings a little trickier i might have to subdivide that.

recording other bands is another matter.

i can recall countless shitty bring me the horizon wannabe talent less, soul less suckers of satans cock who i recorded where i would have to loop take EVERY BAR! No fun at all! I hate those bands

I really think it depends what type of band you are recording, and what kind of vibe you are going for.

If its more groove stuff, or doom, etc. Whats the point in doing it bit by bit? Let them go for a take of the song.
For tech metal, Im pretty sure half the bands will play the chord part, then do the lick or whatever over the top (Beneath The Massacre etc).

As greyskull said, I also you a mix of the two. If you do cut every single bit up, it is going to have no soul, or feel to the track.
