Guitarists - getting better at triplets?

What, that little hammer on progression right at the end of vicarious? Yep. Troo dat.

Yup. But also the main theme in Schism is composed of a triplet figure. In fact, it's more challenging than straight triplets, because one of the notes is not a triplet - so its a good song to learn if you wanna practice going between non-triplet and triplet forms.

For triplets I'd say play along to As I Lay Dying's Shadows are Security , the whole damn thing is triplets haha. Also Fear Factory. And yeah it's one of those things you just gotta practice for a while. Make sure you always warm up before trying to record anything.

Whoever told you that doesn't know what they are talking about...then again there's no real wrong in technique but I don't know...I've ALWAYS heard that you shouldn't use you're whole arm. My picking is only wrist and forearm

according to jeff loomis your only supposed to use your wrist cause it makes your picking more precise and keeps you from going too far away from the string after you hit it.

I was always under the impression a "triplet" is just 3 notes per beat. Not necessarily the same duration. as in they could vary from -

My downstroking and galloping and whatnot are really incomprehensibly slow, at least compared to my alternate picking - I guess it really is just a matter of busting out the ol' metronome and having at it! (to give you an idea, the downbeat gallops in the second main riff in "Raining Blood" before it goes into TURBO SPEED are about the fastest I can play :erk: I've just always focused my effort on developing my alternate picking, I suppose because of my lead playing inclinations)

Nope, a triplet is a group of three notes that are even played within the place were originally were two. For example, commonly you could have 2 8th notes per beat. 8th notes triplets would be 3 8th notes crammed evenly in the place where the original two would be

To take this further, you could have something like a sept-tuplet. Using 16th notes as an example, this is 7 notes placed in the place where you would normally have simply 4 16th notes.

In your examples, only the first is a triplet. The second is one 8th note followed by two 16th notes and the third is two 16th notes followed by an 8th note

Hope that helps clarify.

Oh yeah, and generally speaking in terms of "proper technique," your wrist should be the only thing that moves when playing on one string while your arm moves you to the next string to pick those notes with your wrist. Your arm, again from a proper technique perspective, should only move to change strings.

The reasons for this can be very detailed, but it essentially makes you much more efficient and consistent.

2 songs I use for warming up my downpicking that are helpful

1. Master of Puppets
2. In my World (from Anthrax)

More fun than playing to a metronome ;) Try it

I don't know why but that "TURBO SPEED" made me

But you know, whatever, as long as your capabilities don't hinder you in what you want to achieve - don't stress it. And I know you don't have a shreder's penis length compensation problem to begin with, which is cool.

I will always remember when I saw Petrucci playing the verse riff of 'Master Of Puppets' with alternate picking. It was like a world collapsing and at the same time a huge ballast off the shoulders... Even HE, the almighty planet destroyer, isn't perfect.

A lot of Anthrax songs feature some serious fast downpicking... their 'Antisocial' cover immediately comes to mind.

"Be All End All", "Caught In A Mosh" and "Indians" can be pretty brutal sometimes too ... thats why we always make sure they are 4th in whichever set we are playing ... usually followed immediately by "Raining Blood" :D

Oh yeah, the verses of "Caught..." and "Indians" (with the change of down- and alternate picking) make me drool. Love him or hate him, but that bearded dwarf is a killer rhythm player!
