Guys I think Arcturus is really overrated and not that great at all, actually.

La masquerade Infernale is way better.....although I like Sham Mirrors too.

they play proggy metal...that doesn't sound queer and cheesy like most prog metal.
and that's why I like them.

Arcturus is damned fine...I find myself enthralled by the malevolent circus atmosphere on La Masquerade each time I listen to it, and I also like the cosmic feel of The Sham Mirrors a lot. And Sverd's work on both albums is just awesome.

they have moments that are pretty great, but overall I don't really get into it. same with Virus and DHG and Solefald.
Did that dog in your avvy just...... nah. Nevermind. *Shakes Head*

to clarify: I think these bands are pretty smart and are doing great things to expand the genre, I just don't dig on em 100% if you get what I'm saying.

Arcturus rules muchly. The Sham Mirrors is good, Aspera Hiems Symfonia is good, and LMI is GREAT. LMI is definitely in my 10 best metal albums list, along with Solefald's Neonism and Ulver's Bergtatt amongst others. You don't have to like every band Firedwarf, but Arcturus are not overrated because you don't like them that much. They were definitely one of the most influential and innovative bands in the black metal scene in the mid 90s, they basically started post black metal.

I only say The Sham Mirrors is overrated because so many people at the Off Topic board were hailing it as "genius," which it really isn't. It's just a good album. Then again, the word genius is thrown around all the time, to the point where it has almost lost meaning, so I guess it shouldn't bother me.

Totally. I think Sverd's the real driving force behind Arcturus, not Garm or his vocals.

Respect for saying "they're good but I don't like them", phrase a lot of folks seem unable to utter for some reason...

@Firedwarf -- What Arc album did you listen to, and what do you usually listen to? I sure hope your opinion doesn't stem from having listened to a couple of MP3s...

By the way, Aspera Hiems Symfonia owns the other three albums. :headbang:

I have both LMI, The Sham Mirrors, Disguised Masters, and Aspera Hiems Symfonia. I like the last one the best.

You have both of those 4 objects? That's unpossible!

Also, LMI was the sophomore album for Arcturus, Aspera Hiems Symfonia was the debut full length but they had 2 prior eps / demos called My Angel and Constellation as was already mentioned.

Wow, that must suck to've gotten them all and not like them. Hope they grow on you some!

i have a my angel 7" on red vinyl someplace but i recall it being less than stellar.
i am pretty 'meh' on the band overall. used to dig on aspera before i lost it, but that was at my peak of interest in black metal- it was mostly different because at the time not many bands had tried to stretch black metal to the 'nice production' sound. the guitar solo in Fall of Man was great. LMI was interesting, but sounded like they tried too hard to be weird. haven't heard sham mirrors.
