Children of Bodom's most underrated and overrated songs?

Kissing the Shadows seems to be one that's more appreciated by musicians. I didn't like it that much until I decided to learn to play it and now it's my favorite song on Follow the Reaper.
I heard that it was written and recorded in a day because they were in the studio and needed one more song for the album... I'm not sure how true that is though.

Yeah they figured they didn't have enough material so they mashed together some unused riffs and formed this song. So to speak. I wish they could go back and change the chorus.

I think with experience you learn to detect the depth in a song. This is why for example In Your Face is so catchy to metal-beginners and for example Kissing the Shadows or Downfall are not quite so.

It's also one of the most boring songs they ever wrote (the AYDY album aside).

I fail to see the logic in this. AYDY is supposed to be the omgheavy album that's quite superficial and should make an impact to metal beginners, yet you think it's boring and KTS is boring as well. Nothing pleases you does it.

If you understood what the fuck was going on when that album was being made, you'd know there were compromises made with that album. It was hard to drop jaws of hundreds of skilled musician fans with an album they only had so little time to write, so they made a commercial move. I have my own ideas how to better the sounds of that album, there are things that bother me, that's all. Other than that it's actually only got 3-4 bad songs. And a COB song that's not bad is obviously bloody good. It's simpy the album where COB meets America. If they could've taken the best musical ideas of the album, plus the 2 tracks from the EP before that, morphed them together with more time at their disposal, made better mixing work and better tones, and no intentions to go to American market... it would've been an album that changed the world. However there are many ifs. It's still got many awesome things in it, and overall I maybe enjoy it more than HCDR.

I think Bastards Of Bodom is probably underrated. Funny song.

Overrated: Mask Of Sanity, also the Something Wild album among some people. I dunno how some people can say that SW is great and AYDY blows.
Underrated: Besides their last two albums? Taste of My Scythe, Northern Comfort, Knuckleduster, and maybe Children Of Bodom.

My ipod's broken, so I can only play it on shuffle. So after listening to all these mediocre songs, Taste Of My Scythe came on and ripped my face off. I think it's just underrated because it's on the same album as all those other great songs, and this one just isn't quiiiite as good as most of the others. But it's actually become one of my favorite's on the album.

Taste Of My Scythe would be an exciting gig opener, something different. Mask Of Sanity is gotta be one of the reason Japanese people dig COB. ^^ Nothern Comfort is interesting, but the main riff just isn't what metal's supposed to be. The thing with Knuckleduster is weird, since it's gotta be among many people's top ten COB tracks (it is bloody fucking awesome) but it's not played live because only those-who-may-call-themselves-fans recognize it - which is a big shame as I heard it was killer when they played it live.

Could somebody sent me Knuckleduster? I've totally forgot this song and I didn't have it on my hard drive and don't want to have a shitty youtibe quality version. Thx!

EDIT: I've found my Trashed EP :)

I don't know what it is about MOS, exactly. It just bores me for some reason. Why do you say that's one of the reason COB's big in Japan?

The Northern Comfort riff, it's the one that I think you're referring to, seems pretty similar to a lot of bodom's other melodic riffs. Maybe a little more relaxed than most, but still has the nice melodic groove with a classical feel.

It's my understanding, as far as shit I've read, that Henkka and Alexi both like Knuckleduster, but nobody else does. So they don't play it live. Every time I see them, I yell at Henkka to play it, though. I'm sure he hates it, haha. I do wish there was at least some bootleg video of them playing it live, though.

It's got emotion (look at the lengthened intro in that famous Seoul gig) energetic dm vocals, killer solos, and especially the ending is something Japanese. ^^ (Shame for the cheesy lyrics on the chorus.) Alexi used to do some amazing vocals on that one back in the day - there was a video where that was captured but it's been gone for a while.

Knuckleduster isn't a cover song? I always thought it was a cover but you guys are talking about it like it is an original song, haha. Yeah, shit song and that EP marked a new era of crappy bodom metal.

Except for the "cheesy lyrics on the chorus", I really do agree on all you said. :)
