Hardcore?

Well don't let Anselmo hear you calling Pantera a hardcore band.

When we use the word Hardcore, we mean bands like Biohazard, Pro-Pain, All Out War, Neurosis, Stampin Ground and stuff like that...

You should hear what people here classify as hardcore. It's fucking hard techno or trance or that shit. They just ripped the name from the NYC hardcore.

"hardcore" is the short form for "hardcore punk"...bands like suicidal tendancies, biohazard, godsmack are hardcore bands. even though it definitely requires LESS talent than ANY kind of metal and most of the metal fans try to disregard hardcore, as it is the fusion of punk and metal, hardcore IS metal...very much black sabbath influenced. and neurosis is no way a hardcore band. you could use the adjective "hardcore" to describe their music, meaning heavy, but you acnnot classify them as hardcore.

You guys don't seem to know very much about hardcore.
Hardcore is short for hardcore punk, but its not a mix of punk and metal.
Hardcore started in the late 70's, and was a reaction against punk becoming too trendy and fashion oriented.
early hardcore bands included DOA, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, and Bad Brains. None of these bands were very metal influenced.
In the mid 80's a new sub-genre that became known as cross-over started. it was made up of Punks who were into metal, and MetalHeads who dug hardcore. Bands like DRI, Corrosion of Conformity, Septic Death, SOD, Discharge, Amebix, Dayglo Abortions, Suicidal Tendencies, and Hirax were considered cross-over. Some of these bands became more metal as time went on(Suicidal, or COC), some didn't(Septic Death).
Hardcore is more then twenty years old now, and lots of sub-genres have apeared(Emo,Metal-Core,Youth Crew, Power Violence, etc). Influences have gone both ways(A lot of Grind bands have come out of hardcore scenes, Earth Crisis are definetly metal influenced)
There is alot of hardcore out there that is metal influenced, but there are also hardcore bands that sound nothing like metal(Los Crudos, Ruination).

As far as Neurosis goes, they started out in the San fransisco punk scene, and thier first record(Pain of mind) is a hardcore album. as time went on they changed thier sound, and became more and more metal, and progressive. I'd still call them a hardcore band, because thats where they came from. They might not sound like a typical hardcore band, but they dont sound like a typical band period.

I dont know why this stupid metal vs hardcore argument always comes up. I got into hardcore through metal, lots of the thrash bands I was into in the late 80's were into it(Anthrax, Metallica, Kreator). Here is a short list of metal bands who cover hardcore bands. Metallica-Last caress/Green Hell, by the Misfits, Hear nothing, see nothing, say nothing, by Discharge. Anthrax-Protest and survive, by Discharge. Sepultura-Policia, by RDP. Pantera-The Badge, by Poison Idea. Slayer did a whole fuckin album.
There are lots of Hardcore bands that would appeal to metalheads. Here is a list of some of my favorites.
His Hero is Gone, One eyed god prophecy, Initial state, Behead the prophet(nlsl), Spazz, Charles Bronson, Man is the Bastard, Fuck on the beach, Botch, Isis, Crom, Orchid, Monster X, Amebix, Poison Idea, Cryptic Slaughter,Septic Death,Buzzov*en.
There are tons more, don't let shitty bands like Earth Crisis, or HateBreed turn you off.

Yeah, what he said :) (although I wouldn't have put Discharge in the "Crossover" list).

i dont really get into the music and i have checked out a lot of those bands. i get bored with the attitudes and a lot of the political stuff that *seems* to go along with it. i'm not involved in the seen though, this is as an outsider, though i've seen plenty of hardcore bands live (i was at the NE hardcore and metalfest last weekend).

one thing i can't stand is the fans at shows with their dumbass snapkickin, floorpunchiin, pointin, throwing elbow bullshit. i fuckin hate that shit.

I was right with you up until that last sentence - what's wrong with Hatebreed? I'm listening to them right now! Still, everyone's entitled to their opinions, and you definitely know your shit...

What's your opinion on Poison The Well? Most of the metalcore mob seem to be creaming their jeans over them at the moment...

As for discharge being "crossover", I would definetly use that term to describe them. They started as a Metal influenced Punk/Hardcore band, and as time went on they became more and more metal. I think their later stuff is terible, when they started to use a high pitch metal style of vocal. It might have worked for Maiden, but it didn't work for discharge. The first couple of albums rule.

I don't like Hatebreed, or Poison in the well. The music is alright, but it just doesn't move me.
Alot of the stuff people call MetalCore doesn't do much for me. I do like Botch, Isis, Dillinger Escape Plan, Burnt by the Sun, RaceTraiter, DeadGuy(with the first singer), and Doughnuts, which some people would call Metalcore. Just different tastes I guess.
I'm more into "PowerViolence", like Spazz, and Man is the Bastard, old Crossover stuff, or Grind, like (old)Napalm Death(who started out as an anarcho-punk band), and Assuck.

And to the guy who doesn't like the "hardcore Dancing". I hate that shit too.

If you don't like hardcore, thats fine. I just find alot of metalheads are really closed minded about other forms of music. Have you ever heard the Swans, or Sonic Youth's first album. They're not Metal(or hardcore for that matter), but the music is fucking heavy. You might like it, or you might not, but you'll never know if assume anything not Metal is "gay".
