Right, i downloaded some dream theater, and came upon the track "metropolis part I" which i later discovered is from images and words. I was completely blown away by this track, and when i went CD shopping decided to get a DT album. I went for metropolis part II for two reasons:
-I'd read it was the shit on several websites including amazon reviews
-I loved metropolis I and thought this might be similar

Alas, i just can't get into this album. I haven't had that much time recently, and haven't listened to it end to end, or even extensively yet, which could be one reason. I don't know what it is, i think its the vocals. Labraie (sp) was absolutely stunning on part I, and on here he sounds like a boy band singer....

Im either just plain dissapointed or misguided, tell me which please and maybe tell me how you got into this album, and even if you like it at all.

PS
Any other DT records i should buy? Im thinking images and words since i know i like a couple of songs from that

No offence intended. I just find it strange how there are so many Dream Theater threads on the Official Symphony X forum.

Hah, as you know i am quite against DT, and i find it slightly irritating that there are so many DT related threads, but at the same time i have to say that there are other bands that i like more that people post about here, so i can't really complain. *sigh*... i wish i could

Get Images and Words - you won't regret it. Metropolis part 1 is their greatest.

Awake is a fan favorite of DT, and if you don't like Scenes you'd probably like it. ACOS is my favorite after I&W.

Hope I helped.

The cross-pollinating is good for all parties involved. I discovered Symphony X through DT boards, and I'm very grateful those folks enlightened me. As sick as you some of you may be of DT, it can be exciting for someone new to discover a previously established band with a large discography. Very costly, too, as I'm finding out recently with SymX.

Scenes was blah, except for Home, that's a great song.

But yeah, I have to admit that I find it odd that all these DT peeps keep popping up. I, too, am sick to death of them, but if DT fans wanna come here then whatever. I would hope that it means they like SymX...

Symphony X is my favorite band in the world next to Children of Bodom but I still like to discuss Dream Theater.

Besides their official forum is boring and there are a ton of lamers on it, and I get flammed for liking more extreme metal, "its not as technical as DT!" Give me a break.

If part I is their greatest, im a bit dissapointed. Don't get me wrong it is a great great song, but i thought they might have lots more material of similar standard. Oh well

Please don't think that I was saying I didn't like DT fans here. It's perfectly fine. I was saying that I was sick to death of DT not the fans. I guess it's just a coincedence that so many have come at once.

The entire Images and Words album is of similar standard. I don't like Scenes at all either.

About getting into SFAM; For me listening the album straight through with earphones at a trainstation did it. (long story  ) And I had the cd booklet in hand the whole time so I could really get into the story at the same time.

Just concentrate on listening and let the music and lyrics guide you. (And treat Labries cheesy ballad voice like the mandatory kissing scenes in an action flic - just try to ignore it and stare queasily at the ceiling. )

Oh I didn't take it that way, I was just explaining my case for discussing DT on a Symx board. I originally came here for CoB but this place is cool and had Symx mb on it too. :)

Doktor Shred, first of all, if you still havn't yet, listen to it all the way through. Dim the lights, headphone it if your system isn't great. It is an incredible musical journey. I say that in the least cheesy of ways. Among the greatest concept albums ever created. Finally Free is one of the most killer finale type tracks out there. I hope you come to like Scenes.

Best DT songs: Metropolis Part 1, Take the Time (my personal favorite), Learning to Live, To live forever, The Glass Prison, and finally the DWoT song of DT.... A Change Of Seasons.

I&W is easily the best album. You'll love it.
