Hell why not, Favorite Lyricists

Lord Worm from Cryptopsy writes the only gore/death lyrics I like:

Graves Of The Fathers

Sextons of the churchyard
Have seen unblessed things;
Ground no longer hallowed
Has sprouted new graves.

Descendants of clan
That unsurped maternity
hear whispers in their blood;
This summons of the Fathers.

Adherence to the principle
Of "man by woman born"...
Anachronistic ritual
Soon to be obsolete.

"Forgive me Father
For I know not what I do;
My grave beckons
As irresistable as drawing breath."

Nature abhors a vacuum,
The same is true to a tomb...
It cannot be empty.
A barren womb of plenty...
A vacant grave must be filled.
For this the Fathers' will,
Material birth be abjure,
A mother's cunt is unpure.

Sired in blasphemy,
In nocturnal obeisance to rotted hearts
Filled with necrolatry
Reverse the life cycle be reborn through Death.

"Forgive me Father
For I know not what I do;
I leave a void to fill one,
Hear my prayers from far below."

Any reason? I would agree about the new album, and I would acknowledge that parts of Lateralus are too pretentious with the whole spiritual enlightenment rubbish, but everything on Aenima is genius. And don't tell me Prison Sex isn't incredibly powerful.

Eh, I've just never been fond of his style - too "angsty"

I'm surprised you haven't mentioned Pain of Salvation, since you mention them in every other thread. As skeptical as I am about this band, the lyrics aren't bad - 'Mr Money' comes to mind (if that's actually the name of the song, I lose track, because every song on that album has about 17 different titles).

Haha, I love their lyrics on the albums up to BE, they really work conceptually :) I guess I don't really notice the lyrics as much as I do the music and vocal work - they're good, not amazing like Martin's or Alan's though.

The song you're talkin' about is Dae Pecuniae.

Viking era Quorthon.

All still, no more pain
the wind whispering my name
this wound, my last
the darkness around me seems vast
Then a bright light I see
the clouds swirl and they part before me
in the distance a woman approaching
with a gesture she invites me to proceed

Then a bronze horn I hear, it calls me
and the bridge seems to stretch for a lifetime
way before me a palace is rising
out of the mist like a mountain it stands
And it greets me with gates open wide
all around me bloodbrothers by my side
and they show me the seat that bears my name
my place at the table of Oden I do claim

gives me goosebumps

can't believe I am the only to say opeth

And so you left us
Jaded and gaunt, some September
Wilted with the seasons
But hidden inside the delusion
I saw you eyes, somewhere

Devoid of death
The aura poises amidst (the storm)
In solid tears I linger
A parlour glade, moonlit sorrow

Lonely resting pools
Relics of the moon-dogged lake
Whisper: "All your words are missgiven"

Am I like them?
Those who mourn and turn away
Those who would give anything
To see you again
If only for another second

Your face was, like the photograph
Painted white
We did not speak very often about it
What does it matter now?

Cloak of autumn shroud
I gaze, dim ricochet of stars
I reckon it is time for me to leave

You sleep in the light
Yet the night and the silent water
Still so dark

gorgeous lyrics

Akerfeldt's lyrics usually make no sense to me. Aesthetically tasteful as they may be, they don't seem to be ABOUT anything in particular. Which is why I would prefer a song like 'Face of Melinda' because at least the song is coherent.

I need to go with Akerfeldt, though Theatre of Tragedy have some incredible lyrics.

Honorable mention to Xenoyr of Ne Obliviscaris, click my sig if you want to hear some of them, they are genius.

Chris Barnes:is at the top of my list followed by

Wino:great vocalist and insightful

The guy from Nuclear Assault is cool but I forget his name

I like tons of 80's punk vocalists

Draconians lyrics are amazing, every song is a true poem.

The Abhorrent Rays.

As the delicate nightsky once again dies
The mist of dawn brought ruin and demise
Darkness dissolves, every dream withdraws;
Returning into a world of shallowness and lies

This world is helpless...
I descend... I flee
To sympathize for their souls;
You have to humanize me

Still the waning sun bleeds upon paradise...
On the morrow of war it shall not rise

This world is helpless...
I descend... I flee
To sympathize for their souls;
You have to humanize me

Among the deficient humankind I'm concealed,
A sad and fragile world never to be healed
My expression of grief towards the horizon wails,
Alone and aimless on the oceans of sadness I sail

"O, miserable sun, consign I will not
I shall not conjureth a false identity o' my kind...
And thy lights dost not err noctural lovers affection
Pure love flies in the night,
When thou hast sunken beneath god's shameful world;
Hiding in shame, while my spirit remains
My cradle will wock in e'ery place where lovers mourn,
Where night feeds ye troth of longing within every fallen star"

Here alone in this neverending maze...
In the midst of everything there's but a void to embrace
Never have I suffered as this within,
Never has a greater woe in me assailed

See the angels' cry...
In the eyes of mine

See the angels' cry...
In the eyes of mine
