I still say Profire! I've heard the converters (especially DA) on the Firestudios are pretty crappy, and the Saffire 40 scares me for how it offers the same features as the Firestudio 2626 and Profire 2626 for $200 less...
Haha, well I decided against plugging that one cuz it only has 4 mic preamps, and for $1700 I'd think that'd be unacceptable for a dude in Ryan's position (meaning, still in HS ), especially if he's currently considering the $700 entries!
You can get one for less. Ryan makes good recordings, so he can make good money. It's about being confident and authorative. Your clients like it when you promote yourself and imply, "I know what the fuck I'm doing, you know I know what the fuck I'm doing, so open your damn wallet and pay up!"
Also, if Ryan makes great recordings with his Firepod, why waste money on a semi-upgrade? Think about it, what good does it do if you take one step, when you should be taking two?
Well it's of course up to him to decide how much he's willing to spend, but I know it's way more than I would! (my current goal actually is an Echo Audiofire 12, a Focusrite Octopre LE without the ADAT card, and then eventually an RNP, seems like a good value combo)
Just switched to a Profire 2626 from a FP10, I'm pretty happy with it! 2x ADAT and well, everything a bit better than in a FP10, and for the same price... I can't complain at all! Works flawlessly too, though it is bothered by my Lacie Quadra external HDD which is connected via FW800, but so was the FP10. I need to get me an eSata expresscard I guess.
I love my Profire 2626. I was using 2 Firepods before moving up to the Profire...Vast tonal improvement, IMO. Preamps sound great on the Profire...Everything sounds better on the Profire, actually.
