i picked organic, just cause i personally am pretty wary of genetically modified stuff, but i don't fault other people at all for eating it and i actually eat plenty of it myself...but when i have a choice i tend to prefer organic produce, juices, stuff like that

beef that isn't all-natural is not good stuff though, pumped full of antibiotics and hormones, i just can't imagine that is anything but bad, bad, bad for everyone involved. except the ones making the profits, right.

My personal feelings are pretty much in line with yours. I try to find organic fruits, vegetables, grains, and so on. Organic beef is taking things a little farther than I am concerned with. All natural beef is all I need. You're right that pumping beef full of hormones and anti-biotics can't be good for you, though.

Ever since I got this damn intestinal disease/thing/crap/etc., I've been a vigilante when it comes to all natural foods and so on. I actually don't eat much beef at all right now. That's only because of a special diet I'm trying, to see if it helps with the intestinal problems. Basically I'm just avoiding almost all saturated fats. My life has basically become a quest to find a way to eliminate prescription meds and still have a normal GI system.

Why do you think geneticly-modified food is bad for you? Just wondering.

I don't think genetically modified food is bad for you. The only things I don't want on my produce is pesticides. The only things I don't want in my meat is hormones and anti-biotics. I could probably live with the hormones even.

Personally, I can't understand how a genetically modified food can hurt anybody.

i think it's more the potential of genetically modified food that is objectionable...

-the potential of genetically-modified foods to cause some kind of unforeseen harm to health, however large or small the possibility; because of their recent introduction into our diet we still can't predict some long-term effects that may occur
-the general meddling with the natural order (something i'm sure many people here can appreciate) and the potential for genetically-modified organisms to replace their non-modified counterparts through interbreeding (intentional or accidental) and possibly cause massive disruption to the natural balance
-the potential for big agribusiness (Monsanto, ConAgra, etc.) to patent certain strains of plants or animals (truth, one company was trying to patent a certain breed of pigs) which is WRONG, people should not own the rights to farm or produce certain types of plants or animals, or who knows what could happen down the road, knowwhatimsayin?

my opinion is just for myself and i don't expect that other people hold to the same views but i just think when you start fucking with food, which is the single most important concern for every person on the planet, you'd better be really fucking careful

On the other hand genetically modified corn, soybeans, etc. have given us a HUGE boost in yield. Making it possible to feed many more people around the world, but more importantly making it possible to grow corn in an area where I live, which is very dry. Genetically modified crops have helped keep insect populations from exploding in the corn belt, and they've helped 1000's of farmers to continue farming because of the higher yields.

I'm with you on the being careful with the politics behind it, though.

You forgot the most important type of beef, beefcake:

Nate - where do you slaughter the poor cows? :ill:

We just raise them until they're weened from their moms. Then we ship them off to get fed until they're old enough to get slaughtered. So we never intentionally kill a cow. Everybody in my family is pretty soft when it comes to animals, so we wouldn't have much interest in raising cows if we had to kill them ourselves.

Facilities that slaughter cattle, pigs, etc. are monitored VERY closely to make sure they're being as humane as possible, but mostly to make sure they're not doind something gross and dangerous with the meat. Small butcher shops can kill their own cows, though.

There was a small butch right beside a gym I went to in Valley Center, KS. Sometimes I'd be walking into the gym and I'd hear the butcher shoot the cow in the head . . . then there'd be a bug "thunk" when the cow fell over dead.
