You don't have this huge wave of bullshit 'We are rock and write deeply meaningful songs with 3 chords' bands over in New Zealand yet I guess :(.. well it's basically the mainstream here in UK which I abhor.. but it's hard to ignore when your flatmates and family are throwing the albums and posters in your face.. I'm talking about bands like 'The Zutons' 'The Kooks' 'The Arctic Monkeys' 'The Strokes' I could go on.. lol but I won't because it gets boring :(

yea we do, I can't stand the strokes etc. But what do they have to do with the beatles. I don't know any serious musician who doesn't respect them.
maybe you should give the white album a proper listen before you judge;)

My dad has their entire collection I used to listen to them as a kid, my flatmate is a really big fan and I listen alot and can see where this band is coming from. The music is listenable... I just hate the cliche behind liking the Beatles... everyone says how amazing they are and to me they just arent that great despite how influential they became.

And I brought up the other bands because theyre clearly trying to pull off what the beatles did but theyre failing horribly and it just puts me against that whole genre of music.

So yeah i see what the beatles have done, I see why people like them.. but there's more to dislike than to like for me.

PS. Im not claiming to be a serious musician. I'm just me. I like what I like, what makes me happy.. i'm not going to start magically liking something that I don't just because its apparently 'acceptable' to do this.

Thats the style of music in NZ at the moment.
It sucks. Those bands you mentioned are huge here.
All our "rock" bands are trying to be British and the "metal" bands are trying to be American.

Theres actually no NZ bands i like at all, it's so so sad.

"I listen alot and can see where this band is coming from. The music is listenable... I just hate the cliche behind liking the Beatles..."

Not to get involved in you guys' tiff, but it sounds to me like you want to be different and/or make some kind of statement, more than you actually hate the Beatles...?

PS Yes, the Beatles rule.

I guess thats adding to the fact that their music doesnt make me jump for joy. Its listenable music, but its the fact that everyone raves about music that I dont find that good kinda pisses me off. So in a way you're right.

Yeah, its such a horrible mish mash of copycat cliches. No originality whatsoever and everyone is trying to be everyone else. Yet none of the music is that inspiring or original in the slightest.

One of the most forgotten albums of the 90's and one of my favourite :

Down : NOLA

Every riff is heavy yet melodic, Anselmo gives his best performance and the band does a Black Sabbath meets Pantera meets Allman Brothers meets thin Lizzy (those twin guitars are incredible) better than anyone else and the band has a groove that is his own !

Whitesanke : 1987

Fantastic album and one of Mikael Akerfeldt's favourite !
If you need just one hair metal album this is it ! All the tunes are hits and the playing is tight as shit : Aynsley Dunbar on the drums (ex Zappa, JOurney, Bowie) and John Sykes gives a performance to remember rythm and solo wise
In the Still of tHE nIGHT ! Best Led Zep rip off ever !

Sting Ten Summoner's Tale

When Sting meets the best drummer in the world ( AKA Vinnie VIncente Colaiuta), you have of of the most incredible pop record record ever made.
Sting is as inspired as in the Police days and the tunes are all memorable !
The production of the record is cristal and the playing is spectacular, I mean come on, it is fuckin Vinnie making history here ( the Seven Days groove is a nightmare for every drummer !)

Nile In Their Darkenned Shrines

Best death metal album since Death's Symbolic !
Seriously, this album is death metal's version of Rush's 2112 !
It is brutal as fuck and heavy when it needs to (think doomy candlemass heavy)
The egyptian samples make you travel back in time and listening to this album is like hearing the sound of Egyptian Gods musing about the fate of humanity !
If you want to know about Death metal drumming, Tony Laureano blastbeats like a madman and his tom rolls and cymbal accents are incredible ! Think Neil Peart on (very bad quality !!!)crack !

Muse Origin of Symmetry

And people continue to think they are Radiohead's clones ! WRONG !
Except for their first album and the voice, musically they are very different and have a more hard rock, proggy vibe with Rachmaninoff piano playing !
The compositions are superbly layered with great keyboard parts from Mat Bellamy mastermind ( guitarist, pianist, singer, composer etc ) and the riffs are almost metal sometimes ! Get it !

And of course, get everything from Limp Bizkit I mean this shit is tiiiiight duuuuuuuude ! BRING IT ON !

Keep it real Hommies !!!

I love how people post nu-metal and metalcore albums in a fucking thread for 10/10 albums... Not generic garbage.
Did anyone even bother to check the albums I listed? Blegh, I forgot why I hate forums so much, now I remember.

Ok, your opinion is correct

Seroiously though, you guys seem to stress how much musical preference comes into play to determine how much you like an album, and then you go and bash other stuff for being "shitty". Fuckin hypocrites. It all comes down to what you prefer, and I wish you would understand this. Musical talent isnt the only thing you need to create a good album.

In the middle of his black/folk era. Odemarkens Son has some tasty clean vocals, but Till Fjalls wins beacause the cover art is awesome.

B000069B46.03.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

In the middle of his umm...black/physics/prog metal era. This is more solid and down to earth than my favorite The Focusing Blur. Yeah, get them all.

gentle_giant_octof.jpg

This is fun in a can. Not to say the music isn't serious and mindblowing. And no one can match Knots. A capella and xylophone solo? Yep pwnage.

mantle.jpg

This IS melancholy. Its music for the sake of creation and destruction/not for the sake of music.

sham.jpg

This is my favorite. At least check out something by them.

In the past 20 years, this is as close to a 10/10 album as you can get. Sounding just as fresh as it did the day it came out (1988!), Daydream Nation set the bar for art rock so high that it took 10 years for anyone to come close (that would be O.K. Computer). If one of the reasons you are into Opeth is for the richness of the music and how repeat listens are rewarded, than do yourself a favor and invest about seven listens into this classic.

heres some great albums ive had in heavy rotation lately...all at least 4/5 stars in my book...

Dargaard - In Nominae Aeternitatis
Akercocke - Words that go unspoken...
Igginbottoms Wrench - Same
Abigor - Supreme Immortal Art
Sixteen Horsepower - Hoarse
Arcadium - Breathe Awhile
Neptune Towers - Transmissions...

These are not so much my personal favourites but are master pieces in my opinion.

Star One - Space Metal.
Absolutly awesome album from Arjen Lucassen, the creator of Ayreon. This is similar to the heavier side of Ayreon. Guest musicians include, Russel Allen
(Symphony X), Dan Swano, (both on vocals). Gary Wehkamp (Shadow Gallery) and Jens Johansson (Stratovarius) play guest solos on a couple of songs. Check out Master of Darkness.

Angra - Temple of Shadows.
Angra are a brazilian Prog Metal band. Amazing guitar players that play with alot of taste and write incredible riffs and solos. If you like Symphony X you should like Angra. Check out Angels and Demons.

Marty Friedman - Music for Speeding.
This is Marty's latest solo album and is alot different from Megadeth, but is very heavy. There are really cool catchy songs on this album and wicked playing from Marty. His guitar tone is so thick and clear, really cuts through.

Ayreon - The Human Equation.
Incredible album featuring singers such as Mikael Akerfeldt, Devin Townsend, Mike Baker (Shadow Gallery), James Labrie (Dream Theater) and many many more amazing singers. Each singer plays a character in the story that lasts about 20 songs. Check out Loser, very cool song.
The only bad part about this album is the fact James Labrie has so many singing parts :yuk: but you get over it.

@ rofl nazi: your list is fucking shit. ergo, you have no right to pay out anyone elses.

things i'm reliving / enjoying at the moment.
god macabre - the winterlong
beherit - drawing down the moon
nachtfalke - doomed to die
astriaal - renascent misanthropy
bruce dickinson - the chemical wedding
sodom - persecution mania
dissection - the somberlain
