Now this has probably been discussed before but I was thinking about how I first heard Opeth....1995 I think. I'd been listening to metal for perhaps 3 or 4 years, u know, the usual stuff like Slayer, Sepultura, Morbid Angel etc etc, when I went down to sydney and met a friend of a relative who said 'dude, think about what you've been listening to...have a picture in your mind. Now listen to this."

He spun the volume dial, chucked on Orchid, Under the Weeping Moon...and my whole perception of metal changed...that initial riff that kind of weaves to and fro...I was hooked.

went to the store and picked up Orchid the next day...

didn't look back...

any other stories people?

been discussed many many times before, and fairly recently too... so dont go expecting replies from all the oldies!!

my shortened one line answer:
(early 2000) + ('3 hrs of power' on radio) = opeth

A friend over the net had told me to look up a mysterious metal band called "Opeth".

I had searched in Napster.

I had found.

"10+ minute songs?!!?!?!

Haven't heard of something like that before.

Silhouette? Requiem? Looks like the shortest ones there. I download.

Gyah? This isn't metal! It's piano!

Er.. Under The Weeping Moon. I'll try that.

Er.. Acoustic. Oh wow, awesome guitars now."

At first I was confused.. hearing the term "metal" at the time I would have expected something sounding a little more... commerical metal .. .but now I understand.

Opeth is good.

Cool...u heard Opeth on 3 Hours... did u hear that interview with Mikael a few months ago? Damn if I could only get a recording of that...

I was into mainstream stuff like Linkin Park, New Metallica, and Godsmack. I liked the music but I felt that there was something missing from them that I needed to find elsewhere.

I began searching Amazon.com and found Tristania. I was completely turned off by the growl vocals but bought the CD anyway because I loved everything else about the music. I got used to the growls, and even learned to love them once I set aside my society imprinted biases.

I did another search on Amazon.com and found In Flames. I loved all of their music (even Clayman) and ordered almost all their albums. I became a bit obsessed with them and started lurking on their message board. The board was soon transfered from EZBoard to Ultimatemetal, and I moved with it.

A couple of people from the Opeth board came to the In Flames board and mentioned Opeth with a reverence that I couldn't understand, so I downloaded "In The Mist She Was Standing" off Morpheus, and I became addicted, I ordered both "Orchid" and "Morningrise" and eventually migrated from the In Flames forum, and made my debut in this forum in the "Homophobia" thread. The rest is recent history.

Ironically, I probably wouldn't have gotten into Opeth if it weren't for the Opeth forum.

i actually heard the interview but have forgotten most of it...woe is me.

I remember Mikael saying he's got something like thousands of records and CDs...some he hasn't even listened to. Thats fairly full on...

not sure if I'm that hardcore...not sure if I got that much money...

i can also sum up my introduction to opeth in an equation:

Old Friend + Flat + Friend's Brother's CD's + 3 months = Opeth Fan

I also missed the mikael interview on 3HOP, so if ANYONE has a recording, please get it to me SOMEHOW!!!!! I was listening to that very show, and turned it off about the time that faith no more came on. Andrew Haug sux (no offence if ur out there dude), he still wont replay the interview and the many, many festering 5s ive sent him:mad:

I heard to Opeth for a friend , and in that time , I don't like much , but that was because I don't feel their music.. but with the time ,now, I'm really crazy for this BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!
that was on 1998... I don't remember.
Now I'm really fanatic for the art of Opeth.
I'm sorry for my English
:heh:

My ex-boyfriend recommended them to me a few years ago, but I ignored him.
Then he loaned me two CDs, and I thought they were good, but they didn't blow me away.
But it takes me awhile to get into a lot of good bands, so because of that and links to Dan Swano (my favourite), I decided to give them another try. I borrowed Blackwater Park off a friend when it came out and it got to me. Then I saw them live twice and I was hooked.
So that's my story, as unexciting as it is.
