How old can you be and still live with your parents?

Just wondering because all my friends are 25 or 26 and live at home, except one dude who is married. Some of them make fun of the others for living with their parents, even while sitting in their own parent's garage, because that's where they live.

Bunch of tools. [/useless thread]

My parents plan to start charging rent if I'm still here after graduating from university. I'm only 20 now. I say, live with them til you die for all you care. It's just a stupid society-imposed limitation that's completely unnecessary. In some cultures, entire extended families live together under one roof. Sounds cool to me.

I think too few people appreciate walking around naked drinking bourbon after nailing your girlfriend on every piece of furniture and a few walls as loud as possible.

Maybe that's just me.

That's why my girlfriend's moving in to her own place this summer. 'least I say that's why she's doing it. She might tell you a bit different, like cause her family's a bunch of alcoholics/cold medicine addicts, but she's wrong.

dunno ... depends on the person and the culture.
it is a bitch though, especially in NYC, if you are past 21 and try to bring a girl home.
people here are fiercly independent.

yeah, the excuse of living with your parents "to save money" is complete horseshit. from my experience you just spend more because "you can" ... meanwhile learning zero responsibility.
having that rent due at the beginning of the month makes you get off your ass pretty quick :D

I wouldn't necessarily say an age, because everyone is in different situations. For me, I didn't graduate college until I was 22, and then I moved back home while I searched for a job. I found a job within a month and I stayed at home for about 6-8 months whle I saved money for a new car and enough to rent an apartment with my cousin. I was still 22 when I moved out.

Like I said, everyone has a situation, but yeah, if my kid is still living at home at 25, I'm either gonna charge him/her rent or kick his/her ass out. And if they are living at home while they are working, I'm not paying for anything for them (ie car, insurance, etc).

I lived at home fairly late, my situation was strange though. Most of my possible roommates either also lived home while "figuring out what they were going to do," or fell into the getting hitched funnel. There just weren't that many options to be honest. I lived at home until I was 28, but I paid rent from age 25 on. I also replaced the major appliances as they failed :D

I know people who are 30 year olds and living with their parents, they make their own money, they dont ask anything from their parents, they have their own space, so why the hell should they move? Why they should abandon good old mommy's food for their lame cooking, or junk food? Why should they spend money on rent, bills etc, while they can use them to buy more records, go to more gigs, travel more etc. Is living away from ur parents that important? No its not, a person does what he feels like doing, if he wants to move out he does, if he doesnt, there's no rule saying when he must or he must not move.

I'm 23 and still live with my parents. If I didn't depend on my parents' money (poor student...), I would've moved out years ago. I've always had problems with my mother. Things escalated a while ago, and my parents finally realized that it's best for all of us if I move out. Luckily my part-time work contract was just extended for another 12 months, so at least I'll be able to pay the rent on my own.
Guys tend to live with their parents much longer than girls. Most guys I know who are my age don't even think about moving out. They enjoy being served by their mummies too much... :Smug:

Sorry, but that "excuse" worked for me just fine. If it wasn't for saving money by living with my parents until age 29 rather than renting an apartment, I never would've been able to buy a house in a nice suburban area so early.

First, I was a student until age 22. Second, my "responsibility" was learned by buying a new car and not missing one payment for five years from age 22 through age 27. Once the car was paid off, I saved for two years and VOILA - my own house. As soon as I bought the house, I also bought my parents a trip to Hawaii the same day.

That's true, I forgot that I bought a BMW, :tickled:

Bang - there ya go. Hell, buying a freakin' Beamer is not like buying a crappy blue '74 Chevy Nova.

I sure as hell am not going to feel guilty about making what I feel was a very smart decision in my life. Now that my parents have seen my plan come to complete fruition, I have as much respect from them as I ever have. :)
